Let's talk about popular songs that are empowering and encourage positive thinking! Please add your favorites

please post small portions of lyrics to stay within copyright rules!

This fits in with our discussions about the power of Intention, The Secret, The Law of Attraction....

"Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield (yes this is the theme song to the TV show The Hills! )
Quote:
Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find...
...No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
"Positive Vibration" by Bob Marley
Quote:
Say you just cant live that negative way,
If you know what I mean;
Make way for the positive day,
"I can see Clearly Now" Johnny Nash (performed by Jimmy Cliff)
Quote:
I can see clearly now the rain is gone
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It's gonna be a bright, bright sunshinin' day
"People Have the Power" by Patti Smith
Quote:
Where there were deserts
I saw fountains
like cream the waters rise
and we strolled there together
with none to laugh or criticize
and the leopard
and the lamb
lay together truly bound...

I believe everything we dream
can come to pass through our union
we can turn the world around
we can turn the earth's revolution

A classic...

Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong

I see trees of green........ red roses too
I see em bloom..... for me and for you
And I think to myself.... what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue..... clouds of white
Bright blessed days....dark sacred nights
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world.

The colors of a rainbow.....so pretty ..in the sky
Are also on the faces.....of people ..going by
I see friends shaking hands.....sayin.. how do you do
Theyre really sayin......i love you.

I hear babies cry...... I watch them grow
Theyll learn much more.....than Ill never know
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world

(instrumental break)

The colors of a rainbow.....so pretty ..in the sky
Are there on the faces.....of people ..going by
I see friends shaking hands.....sayin.. how do you do
Theyre really sayin...*spoken*(I ....love....you).

I hear babies cry...... I watch them grow
*spoken*(you know their gonna learn
A whole lot more than Ill never know)
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself .......what a wonderful world.

Great thread, thanks!

Reading the lists here made me want to track down the original "I Can See Clearly Now" by Roberta Flack, from the 70s. (Ahh, my long-ago youth!)

Looking for it at emusic.com, I found this Songs of Success which some of you might like (or parts of it, at least). Unfortunately, they're all remakes ... but they're not bad.

Among them, I was reminded of Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac singing "Don't Stop"

Quote:
Dont stop, thinking about tomorrow,
Dont stop, itll soon be here,
Itll be, better than before,
Yesterdays gone, yesterdays gone.

Why not think about times to come,
And not about the things that youve done,
If your life was bad to you,
Just think what tomorrow will do.

(Oh, and by the way, I never found Roberta Flack's version, so if someone else runs across it, please let me know.)

I kinda like "When you wish upon a star"
Quote:
When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires will come to you

If your heart is in your dreams, no request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star as dreamers do
How about "One Hand in my Pocket" by Alanis Morrisette?
A little snippet:
Quote:
What it all comes down to
Is that I haven't got it all figured out just yet
I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is giving the peace sign
Or "I Believe I Can Fly" by R. Kelly

Quote:
If I can see it
then I can do it
If I just believe it
there's nothing to it

I believe I can fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day
Spread my wings and fly away
I believe I can soar
I see me runnin' through that open door
I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly

Great thread

My current favorite is Beautiful World by Colin Hay. There's a part in the middle where he talks of what's wrong in the world so it might not work for everyone, but I find this song very positive and uplifting. Here's all the words though they got some wrong http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.ph...22107858509658

Quote:
Perhaps this is as good as it gets
You've given up the drink and those nasty cigarrettes
Now leave the party early, at least with no regrets
I watch the sun as it comes up, I watch it as it sets.
Yeah, this is as good as it gets.

These Are Days - 10,000 Maniacs :

...These are days that you’ll remember
When May is rushing over you
With desire to be part of the miracles
You see in every hour
You’ll know it’s true
That you are blessed and lucky
It’s true that you are touched
By something that will grow and bloom in you...

You Gotta Be - Des'ree

You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold
You gotta be wiser, you gotta be hard
You gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm
You gotta stay together
All I know, all I know, love will save the day
Herald what your mother said
Readin' the books your father read
Try to solve the puzzles in your own sweet time
Some may have more cash than you
Others take a different view
My oh my heh, hey

Spread a Little Happiness - Sung (but not written by) Sting

Even when the darkest clouds are in the sky
You mustn't sigh and you mustn't cry
Spread a little happiness as you go by
Please try
What's the use of worrying and feeling blue
When days are long keep on smiling through
Spread a little happiness till dreams come true

Ani DiFranco - Pick Yer Nose

i think shy is boring
i think depressed is too
i think pretty is nice
but i'd rather see something new
all these plastic people
got their plastic surgery
but we got a big big beautiful
we got it for free
who you gonna be
if you can't be yourself
you can't get it from t.v.
you can't force it on
anybody else

I'm planning to get an MP3 player soon and I'll be watching this thread for ideas for downloads!

When I'm feeling down and waiting for the bad feeling to pass, because I know it will eventually pass, I think of "Ooh Child" by the Five Stairsteps.

Quote:
Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna get easier
Ooh-oo child
Things'll get brighter
Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna get easier
Ooh-oo child
Things'll get brighter
Right now, right now

, as usual

these are the songs i use

Row, row, row your boat
gently down the stream (i.e. go with the flow)
Merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a dream! (another creation of ours that, like our sleeping dreams, we have control over!!)

Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah

Music by Allie Wrubel
Lyrics by Ray Gilbert
Performed by James Baskett
© 1945 Walt Disney Music Company

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay
My, oh my, what a wonderful day
Plenty of sunshine headin' my way
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay

Mister Bluebird's on my shoulder
It's the truth, it's actual
Ev'rything is satisfactual
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay
Wonderful feeling, wonderful day, yes sir!

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay
My, oh my, what a wonderful day
Plenty of sunshine headin' my way
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay

Mister Bluebird's on my shoulder
It's the truth, it's actual
Ev'rything is satisfactual
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay
Wonderful feeling, feeling this way

Mister Bluebird's on my shoulder
It is the truth, it's actual... huh?
Where is that bluebird? Mm-hm!
Ev'rything is satisfactual
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay
Wonderful feeling, wonderful day!

part of this song...

Artist: James Brown Lyrics
Song: I Got You Lyrics
(I Feel Good)

Ohhh

Chorus:
I feel good
I knew that I would now
I feel good
I knew that I would now
So good, so good, I got you!

Ohhh

I feel nice
Like sugar and spice
I feel nice
Like sugar and spice
So nice, so nice, 'cause I Got You

parts or all of some old Howard Jones songs...

Life In One Day

The old man said to me
Said don't always take life so seriously
Play the flute
And dance and sing your song

Try and enjoy the here and now
The future will take care of itself somehow
The grass is never greener over there
Time will wear away the stone
Gets the hereditary bone
The old man said to me
Said don't always take life so seriously
Play the flute
And dance and sing your song

Try and enjoy the here and now
The future will take care of itself somehow
The grass is never greener over there
Time will wear away the stone
Gets the hereditary bone
The old man said to me
Said don't always take life so seriously
Play the flute
And dance and sing your song

Try and enjoy the here and now
The future will take care of itself somehow
The grass is never greener over there
Time will wear away the stone
Gets the hereditary bone

Like to get to know you well
Like to get to know you well
Like to get to know you well
So we can be one
We can be one together

Repeat chorus

Together we can cast away the fear
Together we can wipe away the tear
Together we can strip down the barriers
And be one

Don't wanna talk about the weather
Don't wanna talk about the news
Just wanna get to the real you inside

Repeat chorus

Don't you think now is the time

We should be feelin'
Just wanna simply say
Won't let you slip away

People wanna talk about the future
Don't wanna linger on the past
Just wanna reach to the real you inside
Forget cold glances and rejections
Leave the things that separate
Build on a trust that we can stand on

Repeat chorus

Finding all are insecure
Opening the same door
Leaving out a stubborn pride
Seeing from another side

I'll post more as i think of them

Speaking of Natalie Merchant

"Wonder"

Quote:
they say I must be one of the wonders
of god's own creation...

I believe
fate smiled and destiny
laughed as she came to my cradle
"know this child will be able"
laughed as she came to my mother
"know this child will not suffer"
laughed as my body she lifted
"know this child will be gifted
with love, with patience
and with faith
she'll make her way"

I've always loved this song, If You Want to Sing Out by Cat Stevens:

If you want to sing out, sing out!
and if you want to be free, be free
'cause there's a million things to be
You know that there are.

Well, if you want to live high, live high
and if you want to live low, live low
'cause there's a million ways to go
you know that there are

You can do what you want
the opportunity's on
and if you find a new way
you can do it today
you can make it all true
and you can make it anew, you see
ahaha it's easy, ahaha you won't need me to know

Well, if you want to say yes, say yes
and if you want to say no, say no
'cause there's a million ways to go
you know that there are

Well, if you want to be me, be me
and if you want to be you, be you
'cause there's a million things to do
you know that there are...

when i started my spiritual journey - truly started working on it i kept listening and relistening to SEAL's SEAL album. that album so moved me. i didnt really pay attention to every single words but certain phrases would leap out at me. i swear that is all i heard for months (my poor neighbours) and months. and now that i am at a place comfortable where i am i no longer need to listen to it so often. in other words i need something else.

and here is the wierd thing. one day i sat down and thought to myself why the heck does this album mean to much to me. why can i not listen to anything else. so i read the sleve. seal wrote this album when he himself was on his spiritual journey. : wow! that so hit me on my face. every single song moved me. every single one of them. its almost he and i connected at some plane.

of course what also helped was i think he is one of the sexiest men alive :

so here is the link to the lyrics to each adn every song. i didnt know which song to post here so i just chose the first one.

Bring It On Lyrics
by Seal

Bring it on
At first I didn't have the will to carry on
Illusions in my mind
Like that picture when you feel you can't go on
Like you've been left behind
Life goes on, now
Take me to that funky place where you and I were born.
Carry on, now
Psychedlic tendencies of love will bring it on
Bring it on
Bring it on, Bring it on
Don't wait until tomorrow
Bring it on
Bring it on
Bring it on
Give me something for the dream that I am in
You know I love the way you save me
A broken pawn,
I depended on.
Was only life, I was feeling
It goes on, now
Take me to that funky place where you and I were born
Carry on, now
Ain't no reason you should feel for shorn,
Unconditioned love will bring it on
Bring it on
Bring it on
Don't wait until tomorrow
Wait until tomorrow
Bring it on
...Bring it on....
...Bring it on....
Unconditioned love will bring it on
So what lies under.
Is your kingdom come?
Chase it way,
Down low.
It's only life.
Don't wait until tomorrow.
Don't wait until tomorrow.
Don't wait until tomorrow.
Don't wait until,
Wait until tomorrow.
Bring it on, bring it on bring it on
Bring it on

caution: you will need to get up and dance! the lyrics won't necessarily be loa, but i thought this should be here.

what's loa??

Smashmouths' ALLSTAR (written for the singer's young son because he thought most rock-n-roll was too negative or depressing)

. . . somebody once asked, could I spare some change for gas
I've got to get myself away from this place.
I said yep, what a concept
I could use a little fuel myself and we could all use a little change.

Well the years start and they don't stop coming
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running.
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb

so much to do so much to see
so whats wrong with taking the backstreets
you'll never know if you don't go
you'll never shine if you don't glow

hey now, your'e an allstar
get your game on go play
hey now, you're a rockstar
get the show on, get payed

and all that glitters is gold
only shooting stars break the mold
this is the chorus from a great one-played it over and over and over on the subway when times were tough :

Tomorrow, James

Now your grip's too strong
can't catch love with a net or a gun
Gotta keep faith that your path will change
Gotta keep faith that your luck will change tomorrow

and an oldie:

I Can See Clearly Now, Johnny Nash

I can see clearly now, the rain is gone,
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day.

I think I can make it now, the pain is gone
All of the bad feelings have disappeared
Here is the rainbow I’ve been prayin?for
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day.

Look all around, there’s nothin?but blue skies
Look straight ahead, nothin?but blue skies

we all know that one, right?

and I love this one by Erasure (Man in the Moon

...Why am I falling apart
Scattered all around
This topsy turvy room
Will I find the one
Who takes me there too soon
When the night is cold
And you can't find anything
And your will to survive's
At an all time low
The spirit will fly and return
With a new found energy
So keep it within and delight
As your garden grows...and the man up in the moon is shining
Good fortune down on me
And the man up in the moon is shining
Sweet love
Sweet love
