Success rates of IVF?

Hi I am here for a friend. She is only 25 but has blocked fallopian tubes so they just did their first cycle of IVF. Because she and her husband are young and the only problem is her fallopian tubes the doctor led them to believe that it would almost certainly be successful. She even went so far as to say she was positive they would be pregnant. Well today they had the blood pregnancy test and she is not pregnant. I feel so bad for them, they've been married for 5 years and wanted a baby the whole time. I am so sad for them and I guess I don't understand why it didn't work. They transferred two embryos but neither implanted I guess. I am mad at the doctor for making them get their hopes up so much. I don't know where they'll go from here and whether they'll try again. Thanks for any info.

I'm so sorry for your friend. That stinks to be told with such confidence that it'll work, when there really aren't any guarantees. Even when there's no obvious reason why it wouldn't work, things don't always work out that way. My best friend had her first IVF cycle last summer, and it also failed. The fertility problems are all on her dh's side, so they (and their doctors) were pretty confident that it would work. Needless to say they were crushed when it didn't. They decided to do a second round a few months later, but didn't tell *anyone*. That time it was successful, and she gave birth to her son in June '06.

From everything K said, there really is no explanation for why it didn't work the first time. But given their situation, and the fact that all her tests had come back, their doctor highly recommended they do another cycle. She wasn't sure she could go through it again, and I'm not sure what changed her mind, but they decided to try it again afterall.

Hugs to your friend.

Kristen

eta: If your friend has anyone else who has gone through IVF, especially a failed cycle, it might be helpful for her right now. K was able to call an old friend who'd recently had triplets through ivf, but had experienced a few failed cycles before that. It helped her tremendously to be able to talk to someone who's btdt.

Heavenly......I am 27 and have had a similar problem as your friend. She should have her doctor look into seeing if its hydrosaplinx (http://www.conceivingconcepts.com/le...rosalpinx.html)
which is what I had but only found out after ny first IVF attempt came back as a BFN. I too was very upset as I was told I had a high cance of this working expecially since I already have a daughter. The reason for my hydrosaplinx is that I got an infection after child birth. I just recently had my last fallopian tube removed and am hopefully on my way to a BFP. My doctor says my chances are much higher now considering everything looks really good after my laprascopy.

So I hope that helps and since she has blocked fallopian tubes its quite possibe that this is what it could be. I am just starting my 2nd IVF attempt and hope I get a BFP!!!!
