midwifery laws in GA

I was just wondering what was happening with the midwifery laws in GA? I know that a resolution to form a committee to research the need to reinstate midwife certification was passed back in March. Is that all the news for now?

Unlawful, because certification that is required by state law is not available.

The practice of midwifery by direct-entry midwives is effectively unlawful, because certification by the Department of Human Resources, required by law, is unavailable.

While quite a few certified nurse midwives practice in Georgia, most are in hospital settings and none attend home births. There is one free-standing birth center, which is staffed by CNMs.

Midwifery advocates continue efforts to achieve legislation that would make direct entry midwives legal by recognizing the Certified Professional Midwife credential.

Current Legislative Issues — Members of GFOM's legislative committee are working with legislators on HR1341 which will provide for a joint study committee to research the need for direct-entry midwifery licensure. Twenty-four states now have provisions for licensing direct entry midwives, with more being added each year. Contact your legislators to thank them for their support for HR1341.

The last information I have seen was on the GA Friends of Midwives yahoogroup. This was at the end of July, and essentially said that the committee is actively being formed, and that there will be public meetings once it is convened.

If you want to join the group, you can find it at GFM

I'm not sure how current my info is, but I know there was a need for financing for the research committee and that was holding it up a bit.
I have a midwife appt. tomorrow and I'll ask about it.

I'm definitely intersted in this topic because I hope to be pregnant as soon as I O again, so anyone with info, please share. I'll use a midwife regardless of the law, but I'd still like to know what's going on and if there is anything I can do to help.
