I can only speak from my experience, but I arrived at the hospital fully dilated, they discovered my baby was breech, and they cut ds1 from me over my protests.

Chiropractor and a visit to spinning babies and a good read from Pauline Scott. Oh and as strange as this sounds, tell you baby to turn A LOT -- they are smarter than we often give them credit.

I do understand your not wanting unnecessary risk, please just inform yourself well about all the risk, a c/s is not without it's own risk to both mother and baby. And recovery is hard, drugs are necessary, and baby gets off to a rocky start with wet lungs.

FWIW - I think you decision is a sound one and gives your baby the opportunity to do a miracle.

Prayers to you and your baby -- "turn baby, turn"

That is so wrong, so wrong... Who gave consent? I know it's a totally different topic. Without consent, honestly and truly they can not touch you -- of course the new admin papers are a blanket to cover all physicans request. I'm so sorry...

That is because the baby's cord could prolapse more readily with a frank breech since the butt is not as large as the head, and the butt would not hold the cord in as readily as the head would, that is, in other words, the head is a better "cork" than the fetal butt...

The problem with a breech is the reason for it, often, not the presentation itself. Most doctors do not know how to deliver a breech, it can be tricky. Your doctor will not discuss any of this with you, but often a breech is premature, hydrocephalic, or have micro-umbilicus, ogliohydramnios, placenta previa.

Your doctor should explain all of this to you. You are going to live with the decision and its repercussions longer than the doctor will. Write down the questions you have before you go and get that "white coat" fear that most of us get when we are in "their" presence!

Can't you see a midwife?

Nobody consented. It was an "emergency" and they hooked me up to the IV and catheter and whatever and wheeled me in. I'd guess my hospital registration paperwork covered "consent", but I don't really remember what it said - that was a long time ago.

There is no reason you can't vaginally deliver a breech baby!

Especially if you've successfully delivered four babies previously, there is no reason you should need a c/s or even probably an episiotomy for that matter. Breech babies were not invented when c/s were and they didn't all just die before that. Try to adjust your doc's attitude, find another doc, or labor at home and just go when you have the urge to push (or not at all). Don't sign yourself up for a blatantly unneccessary surgical procedure just because your doc, the person you employ, "won't" deliver a breech baby.

Try the chiropractor too.

I always have to say this...seems like so many don't know...

YOu can go see a chiropractor for the Webster technique and this has NO RISKS to the baby and has a VERY HIGH success rate. It is NOT an attempt to turn the baby. It is an adjustment to YOU that allows the baby to turn on his/her own - no manual attempt to turn therefore no risk to baby. The procedure averages about $35 and usually works the first time but sometimes multiple adjustments need to be done. You need to continue 2-3 times a week until you deliver. My chiro has had people come in DURING labor for this adjustment. It is never too late. You can find a chiro in your area who is certified in Webster at www.icpa4kids.com

I will be forever thankful for the knowledge of this procedure as it allowed me the chance at a truly amazing natural vaginal birth that I would not have had otherwise.

Yup. I'm a doula. I've sent clients to my chiro for Webster past forty weeks and had them turn, easy. One in ONE adjustment, one in two, one in three. But they turn. It's low risk, and easy to do. Heck, I'd do it a million times over a c-section!
