Food Dye and Behavior Issues

Prompted by the dairy thread - I've been wondering about this for some time and it just occurred to me to post it here.

Older DS loves popsicles - and I bought a box of "otter pops" - those popsicles in the plastic sleeve that you push up as you go -- to have as treats during this excrutiatingly hot summer.

Anyway - my DD had one one day -- and completely lost her mind!! She was hyper and tantrumy. She kept running around and demanding "popsicle" in her little strained toddler voice. She had fits. I gave her a bath. Still no calming down. I eventually had to take her up to her room and rock her in dim lite with lullaby music on. This behaviour continued for the next full day. She demanded popsicles all day long - would forget for a minute or to after a nap or something - then quickly remember and start the whole behavior going again.

Anyone BTDT? Any good info on this.

I am assuming the problem was the food coloring - as the sugar content was not that high - and DS has had sugar before with no such reaction?

Red 40 and yellow #5 are the big offenders.

Yes. Check out the Feingold Diet for more info on dye sensitivity and hyperactivity.

nak...

When ds has red dye, he is like this for 4 DAYS!!! That and high fructose corn syrup creates a day full of tantrums.

yep. I am affected by red 40 like this, and as an adult, I get out of control. I can feel it like a dark cloud over myself. and for days afterward, I have a HORRIBLE headache and a craving for something really sweet, preferably w/ more the nasty stuff.
