Unison+ B6 for Morning Sickness? - Page 2

Well, I tried it and it WORKED!

I just took one tab and 100 mg of b-6 (they're powdered capsules and I can't split them)

I totally zonked out last night, but I've hardly even thought of morning sickness today. And I've actually eaten! A lot!

I had a full bowl of oatmeal with walnuts and two pieces of whole wheat toast
A yogurt
Tons of blue corn organic chips
A veggie burger sandwhich w/more chips:

This is more than I've eaten in days. I'm so excited about dinner!

Is anyone having really vivid dreams while on the Unisom? I haven't recalled a dream in forever, now I'm dreaming some really wild stuff. Right now I'm in a pay dispute with my publisher and I dreamed that they came to my house and kidnapped my little boy! Dh says its just because I probably haven't had REM sleep since ds was born, but its really wild.

Well, I was having some CRAZY vivid dreams before I started taking the Unisom+B6 combo.

They were so vivid, I can still remember them. A couple of times, I've waken up and needed to take a moment to orient myself.:

Yea! I am so glad this worked for you! I know how invigorating it is to sleep during these tough months. Are you taking a whole or half Unisom?

A whole tab, but I think tonight I'll try a half and see if that works.

I'm just terrified of having to go through another day of knock-me-out m/s.

Ooooh, Unisom is Nytol (same ingredients.... also very similar in chemical structure to Gravol, no wonder it works for MS!). Off to talk to my doctor (or at least the clinic) if my insomnia persists one more day!! Thank goodness this is my short week at work!

Yes, it worked for me too! What a relief, if not with a little guilt. I don't think I would even take Unisom for insomnia if I weren't pregnant, but this nausea is just brutal! I am taking 1/2 at night and in the morning with my prenatal, which has tons of B6 in it (I'll have to look at the exact amount). But it has really helped.

NOt to scare anyone, but Unisom contains the antihistamine that was in Bendectin, the drug given to pregnant women twenty years ago and taken off of the market for causing birth defects.

Bendectin also contained pyrodoxine hydrochloride (B6). The reason B6 helps your morning sickness is because it helps with your body's digestion and utilization of proteins, which combats the nausea and eases the blood glucose levels.

Bendectin was manufactured by the same drug company in Cincinnati, OH that made Thalidimide over forty years ago, Merrill-Dow. My nephew worked as a clerk on the lawsuit. He said they spent lots of $ on the case.

I say try some fresh grated ginger or rubus strigosus (red raspberry leaf) tea.

I totally hear you about being extra careful, but I did some research before trying it, and found no connection. I read that they took it off the market because it wasn't profitable because of having to defend it in court constantly, but they never actually lost a case. I agree that it's always better if you don't have to take something.

from above:

"We conclude that there is no increase in the overall rate of major malformations after exposure to Bendectin and that the three associations found between Bendectin and individual malformations are unlikely to be causal."

I had a friend of mine whose mother was active in the litigation against Merrill Dow. He is 28 and has reduced arms...

On the other side of the court room, I had my nephew who clerked for Merrill Dow through law school. I have been lucky to have been privy to both sides of that case. No, they never lost a case, but they also learned alot from their experience with Thalidimide, which was never legally sold in this country; the FDA never approved of it. The cases that occurred in this country were from the medication brought in from other countries, as Canada and Sweden. Thalidimide was a tranquilizer, not an anti-emetic.

The evidence, ie, the deformed babies were shown with just the deformed limbs and torsos, not heads, so as not to humanize the subject and show the babies/evidence more clinically. The evidence was also triforcated, which is unheard of.

Check out www.motherisk.org or call their nausea and vomitting helpline. I take 9 Diclectin a day right now, and a Zantac and gravol to limit my vomitting. Otherwise I would be hospitalized on IV's and tube feeds. I took it for DD as well. For me there isn't another choice.....But has been studied alot and found to be safe.

Actually bendectin/diclectin has not been shown to cause birth defects.

Diclectin [bendectin] has been used in Canada for over 40 years now, first as Bendectin. Studies during those years have included over 200,000 women and all have confirmed the safety of the medication.

Diclectin is now being used by the second generation of women and will not increase the 1 percent to 3 percent baseline risk for birth defect that is present in all pregnancies.
There are also articles in Journal of the American Medical Association and the New England Journal of Medicine that I can't access online.

Well, I threatened to take Nytol last night (same active ingredient as Unisom) but said I would give it "one more night" of no sleep before I did. Slept like a log last night with no meds. Hubby was NOT impressed that I would even consider it but taking 1/3 of a pill ONCE is better than having me be non-functional for even one more day, risk or no risk.

Not in your DD club but doing a search on this . . .thankfully, my m/s seems to FINALLY be going away (I'm 17 weeks). I talked to my MW about my m/s since it is the worst I've ever had it. I, too, have never taken any drug at ALL during pregnancy/labor, so DH was shocked that I was even considering using Unisom if the m/s got really bad again. My MW said it was a category A drug, and it was just as harmless as B6 (which she told me to keep taking).

She suggested only 1/2 a tablet at night, and only 1 whole tablet if things were really bad.

I think I'm still too paranoid, though . . .not rational, I know. It is either coincidence (timing) or actually working, but I feel like the more sleep I get the less m/s I get. Also, while I find that drinking water while I am already sick works against me, if I can get that water in while I am OK, it seems to help. Or better, NOT water (which is normally all I drink) but things like Gatorade or something with some sugar, like a Jarrito.
