Just Plain Confused????

I was at my wits end and started reaserching Ritalin. After only like 2 pages I decided against it, obviously. But where does that leave me? With allergies :
Well eliminating dairy seems the easiest of them all, even though I don't think it will be easy. But how can you eliminate things like processed foods w/out winning the lotto first. I've heard all that crap about healthy eating being cheaper, well I don't know where those people shop, but not in my neighborhood that's for sure. I don't do a ton of processed foods, but still. And what about wheat? If I cut wheat what will we eat? Especially my child who I know must have an allergy to something. I hope it's dairy cause he's a carb kid. He won't eat anything that's even looked at a veggie, no matter how we dress it up : He'll eat fruits but geez I have to limit it for $ reasons. It's so easy and cheap to just give a chz stick or crackers or rice cakes :

And regarding dairy, does that include goats milk? What's the problem with soy? I've heard it can have alot of sugar, and then I read something about it having hormomes : Yikes. What about Lactaid milk?

How soon after elimiating one group will I see improvement in behaviour, or know that it wasn't the allergy and move on to the next group? I have ordered the Is This My Child book from my library and should have it in a couple days. Also he has a ped appt on Wed. I plan on asking for him to be tested for allergies. Is there a specific way of going about this w/out just leaving with a prescription for Ritalin? I don't know anything about this ped but assuming he's pretty mainstream is there a best way to approach him that's more likely to get his compliance right away?

1. To eliminate dairy I would eliminate ALL dairy (cow's, goat's, Lactaid , anyting with casein, lactose, whey, ect) for 2-4 weeks then have a day where he eats a bunch of it an see how he feels/acts that day(s). Some people can't tolerate cow's milk but can tolerate goats.Read more about "elimination diets" on the web. I would not drink soy milk, but you can make stuff out of coconut milk and make nut and seed milks at home.
2. If he is a carb kid then maybe he is having bloodsugar highs an lows. In would try and increase the protein and fat in his diet because that will not go through his system as fast.
3. I have sensitivities to eggs, dairy, and gluten (wheat). Those three a very common sensitivities. There is stuff to eat, just a lot of learning to do (I do traditional foods and also use raw foods cookbooks since they have ideas that don't have my bad foods in them. Like making "Ranch dressing" out of nuts, lemon, herbs)
4. I found out about my sensitivities through Immunolabs IgG "Food Allergy Delayed 1-4" test. Order it here: DIRECT LABS I have heard the other ones that the dr may order may not be as sensitive or only show if you have "true" allergy (where your skin breaks out in hives ect).
5. Cooking at home from scratch can save $ on whole foods. Plus you are saving by not "paying" for health problems with your time, money, and energy. We skimp in other places. Farmer's markets can have good prices on produce.
6. The "Healing the Gut" thread and sticky has good info.
7. Tell your pediatrician you have been doing a lot of research and feel that Ritalin is not a "cure" for our son. You have researched XYZ as better options for healing/solving his problem.

Healing through more natural means will take more time and energy but you will actuallly be getting to the root of your son's issues and not just treating the symptoms with drugs. Keep reading and you will have enough info toget started on the journey.

Not all cereals have wheat - Trix, Cocoa Puffs, Dora the Explorer, Cocoa Pebbles -- those are the main stream cereals my ds2 can eat. If you can eat oats the choices go up, but we can not do oats.

As for dairy, Rice milk is probably the tastiest, it can get expensive. My ds2 however only ever used it on his cereal, so 1 little quart lasted a while.

My suggestion would be go Dairy Free and Gluten Free. I say this without any other knowledge than Ritalin was prescribed or suggested.

Food proteins take at least 2 wks to leave the body and results may not be immediate. Others might notice before you in 2 wks, but definitely in 4.
