patchy question

Okay, now I'm inspired! The patchwork clothing is so cute--I'm ready to make dd a dress (she's only 6 weeks old, but I'll make one for later in the summer). So how do you do this with a pattern, meaning how do you lay out the fabric pieces and pin them, etc, to fit the pattern?

Also, check out these diaper bags: www.mamamoon.com. I just bought a Land's End diaper bag, which I love, but I kinda wish I'd known about these before. Maybe I'll make one!

Just got another idea from www.moonpudding.com --a patchwork sling. What a great idea! I wonder if the patchwork is sewn to a piece of backing fabric or not? Any ideas? Links for how to sew a sling with rings?
