Seeking book recommendation for a 6yo boy

I am looking for something to send my 6yo kindergartener nephew for his birthday. He is having a rough time. His father is being deployed to Afghanistan in a few months and he and his mom and his little borther have in the meantime moved several hundred miles away from him so they can live near his mom's family while his dad is deployed (they moved before the deployment so my nephew could start the year at his new school). I have been told he is taking this transition very hard.

So I thought I would send him The Kissing Hand and one other book. Mu first thought was My Truck is Stuck becaues my almost 3yo DS loves it so. But I am not sure if a 6yo would like it or not. Thoughts? I am open to suggestions of other titles.

I don't know The Truck is Stuck, sorry. One staple with 4-6 year olds (and 7's, depending on their level) is Robert Munsch. There are nice treasuries that have lots of the stories altogether. In my opinion, some of them are rather lame and others are better, but they inspire a lot of rolling in the aisles in our house. Sounds like he could use a laugh...

Come to think of it, joke books and riddle books are also very popular at that age.

Hmm...it really depends on the kid, I think. DS is 6 next week and for the most part he's moved out of picture books and onow really into chapter books.

A great site for reccommendations is www.guysread.com It's the work of Jon Scieszka. He's an author and was an elementary school teacher and noticed that guys don't read at the same rate girls do. He created the website to get guys reading more and it includes lists of books guys themselves (of different ages: young, middle and older) have reccommended.

We've had great success with reading books off the lists.
