Uggh, 37.5 weeks and Frank Breech

Turn, baby turn. This baby has been in the oddest positions every time I've had my mws appt. Today, I learn the baby is in a Frank Breech position. The baby is laying right across my stomach AND breech, and one leg is down, the other up by the head. I must have a future gymnast in there. Well, now I've got to do 20 minutes of exercise/day on the floor to get this little one to get ready for his/her birthday. I had my home visit today, got my Aqua doula birthing tub all set up and my birth kit arrived in the mail so I'm otherwise all set for hopefully a smooth homebirth. Just need positive vibes to get my baby ready too!

ooooh, best of luck turning that babe! I haven't experienced that exact position yet, but I hear that is the only breech position that CANNOT be delieverd vaginally. What has your MW recommended for turning this one? Anything I can use to encourage the twins to get their butts off my cervix and get head down?

It was interesting that my MW didn't seem all that concerned by it--maybe she doesn't want to worry me. She thinks there's still lots of room in there for a turning baby. Anyways, she's going to try palpitations next week if baby still hasn't moved. She wants me in a hands/knees position for 20 minutes/day and to do pelvic rocking in that position.

If my twins are still spinnig, I am sure yours still has room to boogie too. I have not been able to do hands and knees on the floor, but I have found I can do the pelvic (breech) tilts in the bathtub. The hot water keeps me feeling loose, and I either hold the side of the tub with the shower running, or do hands and knees in a full bathtub. I don't know if it is helping to position the babies, but it feels great and helps keep your pelvis loose. Here's to head down babies for everyone.

Ina Mays books talk about frank breech..

Goodness you can tell that position just by palpating?

I like how you sound patient about this I just took a class and saw some statistics about babies turning. Many can still turn right up until labor. In fact, my brother turned from breech to correct anterior just as my mother got checked into the hospital - and helped her avoid a routine cesarean. I don't know the literature about delivering frank breech at home (though I know that it is generally safe to birth breech babies with someone trained in this). However, my grandmother is sort of famous in our family for having been birthed on the farm - frank breech. She did manage to injure her hip in the descent through the birth canal or at delivery - and she has had that her whole life (no limp or anything though). Still, she's in her late seventies and pretty happy and healthy. If you have a good midwife and a good cranial-sacral therapist to work with the baby after birth that will help too. I'll send you positive turning vibes so that it won't be an issue.

Well, I got to say the hands/knees position did something because I could feel all sorts of movement going on afterwards. I'm not good at telling which big bump is head or buns but the baby moved into an up/down position during the night. I don't think head is down, no heavy pelvic pressure, but at least my baby isn't laying flat across my belly. That position was not comfortable at all, I was so unbalanced like that that I dropped a watermelon yesterday at the coop I shop at and it cracked in half.

Actually, frank breech is the *best* breech position to deliver. Transverse may be what you're thinking of. I delivered my frank breech baby vaginally in January. No complications.

To the OP, Turn baby turn!! Have you tried acupunture, Webster's technique, moxibustion?

I was responding to her comment about the baby having one leg down and another up. That is not a true frank breech. It is more of a split position. If one foot decends into the pelvis before the other than baby will not be able to fit, because passage would end up being more of a transverse position and the baby would get wedged. (She also said the baby was laying across her body. Not true breech there) True Frank breech would be butt first with both feet up near baby's head, and yes that is the best breech position.

I have read way too much about this in the last 6 weeks.

The twins I am baking have been in the same position for weeks... both frank breech... not awhole lot of room left...
