Doing elimination diet, now what?

Hello, Thank you in advance for any advice.

In efforts to be brief I am going to just provide the facts as I understand them. My son is almost three months old, his stools have been green, expolisve and mucus filled since about three weeks old. I treated this as over supply in the beginning, but that alone has not solved the problem. Thankfully he is gaining weight and meeting milestones so at least I am not getting pressure to stop nursing. But because of this people tend to think I am over reacting to the stools. I maintain this is not normal poop for a BF baby. Ok, the following is where we are now...

1. I am doing an elimination diet. I have eliminated all of the eight major offenders, nightshades, corn, pork, and beef. I began this with dairy seven weeks ago and have eliminated the others as time as gone by. Wheat was the latest eliminated and I have gone about two weeks without that. It feels as though the more I give up the worse things get!!

2. The stools are different now than when I started. They were green and did test positive for blood one time, but tested negative after giving up dairy for two weeks. They stayed green until about a week ago and now they are greenish/orangeish/brwonish and vary in consistency from egg white to forgive my bluntess but snot. They have a bad smell. I am not sure if this is a step in the right direction or a step in the wrong direction.

3. Probiotics have been suggested to me, but I do not know where to begin on that front. A friend lent be some of hers that were dairy free. At that time dairy was all that I had given up. Now, I understand that probiotics can contain some of the vary things we are trying to stay away from. Are there any that are free from all of the common allergy offenders that are also safe for infants/newborns?

4. I was given antibotics when he was born, but I have not noticed any signs of yeast or thrush in his mouth.

5. He has some cradle cap and some wax in his ears but those are the only skin type things that could be viewed as allergic reactions.

6. His sugar dropped drastically at birth. They insisted that I supplement. I was not sure what to do, but my instints told me to insist that we only use sugar water. We did this via a feeding tube attached to my nipple. Thank God it only had to be done once. Though I still wonder if it was really neccessary at all. I mention this only because I wonder if it effected his gut.

I would appreciate any advice anyone has for me on how to help my son feel more comfortable. I am worried that if I do not get this figured out his gut will get so torn up that he will be allergic to everyting.

Thanks,
Cindy

Those do sound like allergic poops. What does most of your diet consist of these days? If you are eating a ton of rice, baby might be allergic to rice, so you'd need to find a sub. Like millet (millet is tasty.) Have you heard of the Dr Sears elimination diet?

Definitely get both of you on probiotics. I think I used Udo's Choice w/ Liam, but it was early on before I knew of all of his allergies (top8 plus peas, minus fish.) So I can't remember if they are top 8 free. Most dairy free ones contain rice or corn, fyi.

Do you have a list of everything that is corn derived? Corn is a tough one, unless you're cooking 100% from scratch and have corn free baking powder.

Yes, I have heard of the Dr.Sears eliination diet. Right now I eat only from his least allergic food list. And yes, I am eating more brown rice than usual, but I am not left with many other options. I am also eating quinoa and sweet potato. I will try millet as I have not yet had that one. My question is if I have made my son allergic to rice because I began to eat so much of it after giving up the other stuff won't I make him allergic to these other foods by eating them all of the time.

I have been using the Udo's as well, but I think that might have some other allergens in it. I am looking into finding some that do not.

Thank you for replying to my message.

you might join us in the Healing the gut tribe - and certainly read JaneS' sticky. it sounds like you may have a leaky gut - leaking various proteins into your bloodstream then into your lymph system, then into your milk and affecting your dc.

turkey naturally contains glutamine, a substance used to help rebuild the gut lining. broccoli and others crucifers (cauliflower, kale, etc) contain MSM (organic sulfur) which also help rebuild connective tissue. brown rice is good to help mop up substances in the gut. apples contain pectin which is also gut healing.

i can't do dairy - at least not uncultured. i can do homegrown kefir. it is known to help heal the gut (and other issues). it is LOADED with probiotics - even better than those in capsules.

another noncapsule source of probiotics is raw, unpasteurized sauerkraut.

you might consider adding evening primrose oil, flaxseed oil and fish oil.

if this all is too much for you to handle on your own, you might consider a good naturopath - preferably one that someone else has seen and can recommend.

Please forgive my computer ignorance, but how can I get to the healing the gut tribe? It sounds to me like it is where I need to be reading!

I am having a horrible time trying to get to the bottom of this food allergy thing. As I continue on it seems that I will never be able to get to the bottom of it if I can not do something to heal my son's gut.

Thank you for letting me know about the apples. I usually eat at least one a day and I will begin to eat more. I love broccoli and califlower so it will not be a problem to eat more of those.

It's really worth it to stay on the ED for at least a month until everything's cleared out of your and DS's system. And I give another vote for probiotics! You can get a powdered form to mix with breastmilk or put directly on your breast during nursing.

Good luck!

So from what I am understanding the healing your gut is a monthly thread rather than a sub-forum? Thanks for the links I began reading them, but I think I will have to read them a number of times before I can get it all in my brain.

I agree with what you are saying about the elimination diet. I have been on some form or another for about two months. Beginning with dairy and now for the last three weeks including all of the major allergens, nightshades, pork, and beef. I will stay the course it is just hard when you read that by going to such extremes to make your child better you could actually be making them allergic to more foods. I am just not sure what do eat, not eat anymore.

hi cindy,

i too am 3 1/2 weeks into an elimination diet for my 2 year old dd. we are battling eczema. your story sounds a lot like mine in that you seem to be getting worse instead of better. in order to make up for all the dairy, gluten, and other things we weren't eating, we began eating lots and lots of produce.

just recently i discovered "salicylate sensitivity" which is what my dd has. all the fruits and veggies that she loves are high in this and this is why she craves them (i do too). anyway you might type that into google and see if the shoe fits. it sure did for us!

we're only 2 days into changing our diet again, and today she had her first day ever since beginning the elimination diet, with no shiners! this is a real breakthrough and i feel like we're on the right track.

good luck to you
