Growth Spurt!

Lynden has hit his first growth spurt. He became very fussy on Thursday, and kept it up all day yesterday, and finally settled into a 4-hour nursing spree at around 7:00 last night. I got about a 2-hour break and have been up just about all night nursing (note the ungodly hour that I am up on the computer). According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, this little growth spurt (which occurs at 2-3 weeks, again at 6 weeks, and again at 3 months) will last about 4 to 5 days, during which time he will continue to fuss and will want to nurse nearly constantly.

OH JOY!

If I am still a sane woman in 4 to 5 days, I will be astounded.

I knew my easy baby was too good to be true.

Well, the good news is, you know how to stop the fussing! Nurse nurse nurse, hopefully while you are laying down on your side and can also get some sleep.

And, don't forget, Lynden hasn't been reading the AAP website, so those dates/times/etc are meaningless to him ... 'watch the baby, not the clock' right?

Sorry for the unsolicited advice, I'm twiddling my thumbs on day 6 'overdue' and feeling anxious ... wish I were in your shoes right now!!

Most nights I have nursed laying on my side, but since the fussing/growth spurt started he's only latched properly with me sitting upright, and gets upset if I try any other position. Oh well...

I normally follow Lynden's cues rather than going by the books, but just happened to come across a little section on growth spurts as I read while nursing last night. Whether he takes four to five days or two weeks, I'm already exhausted!

This too shall pass, this too shall pass, this too shall pass...

I wouldn't put to much stock into what the AAoP says as far as how many days a growth spurt will last and what to expect during that time. Every baby is different. Most of the time with my babes the sure sign of a growth spurt was the marathon nursing combined with a VERY sleepy little baby. Not so much the fussy thing. Sometimes our babes are fussy for different reasons. Just be sure you are meeting his need, holding him as much as possible and nursing constantly if that what he's wanting. It can be exhausting, but if you wear him during this time its a lot less work!! (ie sling/moby, something you can nurse and walk in)

Good luck!! remember to drink lots of water and rest!!!

Isa had the same spurt around 3 weeks or so... couldn't understand why my happy baby was fussy. and so hungry! it didn't last that long though, maybe two days at the most. so don't worry, it'll be over before ya know it and your baby will be happily chubby just to say thanks for the mama milk!

Well, he seems to be over it. Today he is back to his happy, easy self, and sleeping so much better, too!
