mothering/unschooling e-mail list?

howdy. i'm thinking of starting a casual e-mail list (yahoo groups) for mothering-loving, attachment-parenting, unschooling families. The purpose of the list would be to discuss both parenting and unschooling questions/thoughts/practices -- and anything else we'd like to talk about. i've never started a list before, and i don't really want to talk it on unless there's an interest...so, if you're interested and would like to share your ideas, please reply!

yahoogroups makes it pretty easy to start a list, and it doesn't take a lot of maintenance.

There is a TCSforUnschoolers list there, for any who might be interested in that direction.

what is the TCSforUnschoolers? maybe i'm just overly tired, but i can't figure out what "tcs" stands for, at least not in this case... ):

Unschooling

Hi-- Iwould totally be interested in that! Sorry, I have no advise for you though on how to start it. But I do know what TCS stands for-- Taking Children Seriously. Good luck!

well, i'm familiar with the cfi (child-friendly initiative) and pcf (putting children first), but tcs is a new one on me. by the name, it sounds great -- of course we should take our children seriously -- but what exactly does the group (if it is a group) or "movement" represent, especially in comparison with, say, the attachment parenting philosophy? anyone have more details? and thanks for your interest in the e-mail list. if we get a few more responses, i'll look into setting it up pronto!

TCS philosophy is consistent with advocating for children's rights. For me, it was a natural outgrowth of both AP and unschooling- though it is not the same as either...

It is about helping children and parents get what they want out of life. And about how people learn. And about the possibility and desirability of raising children without them having to do anything or have anything done to them without their consent. It's about personal autonomy, and the parent-child relationship, and how to find solutions to problems non-coercively through finding common preferences. It's about thinking outside of the box, and questioning everything through critical rationalism.

I could go on, but... since it is a controversial theory that many people find offensive, we've been asked to confine our discussion of TCS to one thread in the Gentle Discipline forum. Please feel free to ask questions and air (positive) criticism of TCS theory on that thread!

Wow. The only trouble with this is that I have real difficulty accessing Yahoo.groups with my browser.

Why can't we just use the Homeschooling Forum in Mothering?

we can use the homeschool forum mothering board, but i was hoping for something list-y for easier e-mail access. i'm not able to spend much time on the net, but because of work i have to check my e-mail several times a day...

thank you, mary, for all the lovely links. perhaps another e-list would be overkill, but if i get enough response here, i'll re-evaluate...

well, it looks like we have some interest, but probably not enough to start our own list. however, i think we should definitely try out some of the lovely links above until the time, if ever, we have a larger mothering/ap/unschooling contingent!

I'd be interested. I lurk on a radical unschooling list (yahoo) and am a regular on a small list for NJ-Unschoolers (yahoo). Contact me if you get this started. I think you should go for it no matter how many people are interested. It'll get around and people definitely start joining.

well, let's go for it then. i'll set it up on yahoo, unless anyone else who's done it before would like to do so. i'm not sure about moderating and the other fine points of e-lists. any advice? and what shall we call it? "natural family learning"?
