Gabriel James is HERE!!

He arrived at 2:02 am after being at the hospital laboring only 2 hours (about 4-5 hrs of laboring at home) and about 5 pushes. He weighted 8 lbs 3 oz (our second smallest baby) and 20 inches.

My very 1st unmedicated birth. :

Here's the (labor & ) birth story:

I was putting Liam's booster seat in the minivan on Tuesday and felt a gush of "stuff" and thought, great. It's going to be a messy day down there I just know it. Since I had on a pantyliner I didn't worry about it much, put Liam in the van and we went to our weekly mall playgroup.

When we got there Liam had to pee so, off to the potties we go. Since Liam went I thought I'd go pee too cause hey, being 39 weeks pg you can always go. I sat down and had a good amount of brown bloody show in my underwear. None on the TP though, so I pulled out the liner and went along my merry way for the day.

I picked the boys up from school at 3.45 per usual and did some studing for my classes. I'd been having ctx for weeks as you know, so I wasn't really paying that much attention. At about 7 I noticed the ctx were fairly close together so I watched the clock and they were 7-10 minutes apart. I kept track for an hr and they were consistantly 7 minutes apart. My MIL was coming to stay with the boys and she's 2 hrs away. I didn't want labor to "stall out" so we waited ANOTHER hour before we called her.

At about 9 I called and asked her if she would like to come visit in about 2 hrs because I would probably need to get to the hospital that night. She sort of freak out. "You mean now?!" I'm like, "well, pretty soon here. I've got at least 2 hrs though, so we have time to wait for you to get here." She left on her way here and Jake and I watched "Being John Malkovich" while we were waiting and to pass the time. I called Steph and told her what was up since she was going as my support person since Jake is SOOOOOO bad at labor and delivery.

My MIL got to our house right about at 11. We finished watching the movie at about 11.20 and headed into Iowa City to pick up my friend Steph. We got to the hospital at about 12.00 midnight and as luck would have it, my OB was the OB on call. They hooked me up to the moniters. Ctx every 3-5 minutes and I was 90% effaced and at 5.

They admitted me and my OB said they were going to break my water, but I had to pee 1st and my bag got a leak anyway . OB finished the rupture and we waited. The ctx were pretty strong then and about every 1-3 minutes and they were really long 1-1 1/2 minutes each. They were really on top of each other I was not getting a lot of rest between them. That went on for about 1hr and 1/2. The OB would not let me get into the shower or whirlpool because my bag was ruptured (duh you did it. ) she checked and I was dialated to 8 and fully effaced. So I yelled that fine I wanted an epidural. They said the anastesiologist (or however that's spelled) was right outside with the cart and he'd be right in.

Fine. I had to pee 1st. I went pee and on the way back to the bed I had a really BIG STRONG HARD LONG ctx. I just sort of stood there holding onto the nurse and Steph sort of rocking back and forth. I got into the bed to wait for the drug man and he came in. I had another REALLY hard ctx and signed the paperwork for the epi. The nurse helped me sit on the side of the bed and I had ANOTHER really hard ctx. The drug guy was swabbing my back for the epi and I told him to stop the baby was coming NOW and to get away from me. They all just sort of froze and looked at me. So I said it again. I told everyone to get away from me. My OB wasn't even in the room. I got them away and off my ass and what do you know, the baby was crowning. I was pushing and the OB wasn't there.

I was screaming and crying and just generally unhappy about the whole thing. Steph was holding one of my hands and some nurse I've never seen before mispronounced my name and admonished me for being too loud and that it didn't help anything. Bullsh!t it helped me feel better. Steph told her to leave me alone and that she would take care of me. Steph was REALLY mad. Hell don't yell at her if you can't get her name right sort of thinking.

The nurse left the room and didn't come back in. Good.

I pushed about 4 times and he was born in 10 minutes. We were at the hospital in labor for just under 2 hours. I think I probably could have stayed home another hour.

Gabe came out really blue. He was breathing, but sort of gaspy and he wasn't making any noises or cries or anything. It's weird because on Monday night I had a dream I had a blue baby. Like he was painted with blue tempra paint blue. There wasn't anything wrong with him, he was just blue. And that's what Gabe's deal was too. There isn't anything wrong with him. He was just blue. He pinked up ok once they took him and worked with him for a couple of minutes. He also had his hand up by his face with apparently is part of the reason the ctx were hurting so damn bad.

So that's it. That's my birth story. Unmedicated, but only just barely. I told Jake if he knocks me up again we're having a homebirth because I am NOT doing that again! I think he's more afraid of a homebirth than the big V, so I think we're done having children. Which honestly, I'm ok with.

He doesn't deal well with "trauma" of any kind. That's why I had my friend Steph there. I think it did freak him out a bit. He's been very... concerned since we got home. More so than he ever was with the other 3 boys.

We had our home nurse visit today. He's back up to his birth rate and has grown an inch already. I called and let Jake know and he relaxed a bit and admitted he was worried. Especially with his jaundice and how much he was sleeping our 1st day home.

I have to give her dh some credit. He and I don't always see eye to eye about life but I have to say that his inability to handle the labor is because he genuinely can't handle seeing Pynk in pain. His eyes teared up as he bolted out of the room when she asked for the epi. He loves you mama. He just doesn't handle emotion well.

Thank you so much for letting me be a part of your joy.
