: My brain is moosh today, sorry:

I just realised my "dumb" questions may help someone else.
When can we start homeschooling? I have a 3 and 5 yr old.
How about theatre and music performances...is there an equivilant?

I'd better stop fiddling around with my computer

You can start whenever you like (we go year round), but you needn't report to the school district until the age required by state law. For a 5 and 3yo I wouldn't spend the money on a curriculum since at that age most kids are learning just by living. You might want to google your state homeschooling laws and types of homeschooling. Not everyone uses a canned curriculum or any curriculum at all for that matter.

For theater and music, you could probably find local children's companies. Even here in the boonies there's a children's performing arts company and acting class through the local dance studio. I imagine suburbs or cities have far more choices. My kids aren't interested in the theater, but they do a homeschool swim and gym program through the Y (two towns away) and my daughter does dance, gymnastics, and cheerleading.

In most states, 5 = kindergarten age, depending on your child's birthday. My ds is turning six this October and I have him registered with Maryland as a first grader this year. You'll just have to check your state's laws to see when you actually have to make it official.

As to when you can start homeschooling, you can start whenever you want.

We started this year by joining a hs group. My son is 3 and we started doing activities with the group. I consider it his "pre-school" since he is not going. He is getting social time with kids and he is learning things. I'm happy we have made contacts with other hs families as it has helped relieve some of my anxiety by seeing so many other people doing it-- and doing it well.

You can "officially" begin homeschooling whenever you are ready. But chances are, you are already "schooling" without knowing it.

Thanks everyone...I've become addicted to Lillian's website and actually getting the chance go through that has really helped

I'm going to hunt down the local homeschooling group here in Grand County.
