I got Harvey Karp's video, I thought I was requesting the book from the library but got the video instead. That guy is amazing. I thought ds hated to be swaddled. But right now he's wrapped up tight, head barely jiggling in pure bliss. He's even been napping in his hammock for about 2 hrs during the day like this. It's amazing how the 5 S's work!

some of the music choices are so funny-- Bear LOVED (and still does love) Willie Nelson. hawk thinks it's okay but, he likes it when I sing more than when we listen to radio/CDs. He likes Karen Carpenter's voice, it seems. learned this when watching a PBS special about her-- he'd get very "quiet alert" whenever she sang. Hawk also likes when I sing Mack the Knife to him.

"what are the 5 S's?" some of you may ask---
I never read Karp, just saw him on Good Morning America and we've successfully used the 5 S idea with both boys.
sucking, swaddling, on his/her side, SHHHing (in baby's ear) and "shaking"-which of course is just jiggling, never shake a baby.

Other helpful hints-- take socks off if it's a poo diaper.

keep the diaper bag ready to roll at all times so you can get out of the house when the mood strikes you. in fact, I need to replenish my wipes and add a spare outfit after being out most of the day.

jot down little milestones (like cooing, smiling, holding rattle, funny songs baby liked on the radio) on your calendar so you don't forget and add them to the memory book when you get a chance--like, when s/he starts preschool at my rate.
