Can a child have more than 20 teeth?

I don't know what's going on with my 2.5yo. He has had all 20 teeth for months, but for the last week or two has been exhibiting all the classic teething symptoms: chewing on everything, putting his fingers/thumb in his mouth, drooling, drool spots on chin, eating on his uglydoll's foot, and chewing on the collar of his shirt so much that the collar and front of his shirt were all wet! All of this is unusual behavior. I've been really fatigued and I realized only recently that he's been nursing more and he's not been sleeping through the night - which he's been doing for the last 3 or 4 months.

We've looked in his mouth for an infection but it doesn't look like he has any sign of one. We brush his teeth and floss nightly. (He loves to get flossed. ) DH (the flosser) says that there's definitely room for more back there and thinks he might actually be pushing in another -third!- molar. Does anyone know if this is even possible? I've googled and searched but can't find anything that says you can.

Thanks!

The space behind the last baby molar is for the 1st perm molars ( 6yr molars) I think the earliest I seen any erupt was about 4 1/2. It would be odd for them to be trying to come in now but nothing is impossible.

My oldest went through a chewing phase at about 3. He would chew or lick almost anything. He is almost 15 now and still chews up his pens/straws/football mouth guard etc...

i should call my dentist! she's a personal friend anyway. HELLO! thanks cherylann!

Hey JBaxter. That's good to know about the 1st perm molar at 4.5. I can't imagine it's possible.

He puts his fingers on the area right behind his second molars when he tells us that's where it hurts. There is definitely room for another tooth. Do I have a Neanderthal?

okay, i'm putting in a call to the dentist.

Curious about the outcome...

I'm wondering the same thing about my almost 3 yo ds. He just cut his last tooth about a month ago, but now he's biting again (which always happened with teething), and when I look in the back of his mouth there's room for another tooth, it's swollen, and it's tender to the touch.

What ever happened with your situation? Thanks!

What about wisdom teeth? Or do they come in with the permanent teeth only (if there's space).

sorry - i'm not sure about wisdom teeth. i haven't had a chance to check into it. I'm moving in a few days and a little overwhelmed or I'd look into it more. I do wonder if it could've been the beginnings of wisdom teeth now that you ask.
