Where can I find info. re. postwar contracts?

No one believes me when I tell them that Cheney's old firm has a $900 million postwar contract for reconstructing Iraq! There was a link posted a while back where I got all this information, and now I cannot find it. Anyone? Anyone? (As I clear my throat and cough, Hilary?)

I thought I read somewhere that Halliburton pulled out of the contract. Anyone?

Houston Chron story

Brown and Root, a subsidiary of Halliburton, is helping to put out and clean up the oil fires, and hired to do so by the gov't.

Halliburton did not bid for the pimary rebuild contracts from USAID, because they didn't want to do anything to hurt Cheney. They will be looking to serve as subcontractors, however.

Oh, yeah...they will be looking for subcontractor work....
that was always in the picture... they are modern day Vikings....they will make a LOT of money off this war and the results of this war.

"Another company until recently in line for the $600m contract is the Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg Brown & Root, whose connections are even more impeccable --Vice- President Dick Cheney was formerly chief executive - and whose contributions more generous. It has ruled itself out of the bidding for the $600m contract, which observers say suggests it has woken up to the possible political damage. But it aims to team up with Parsons, still in the bidding, as a sub-contractor, and has a lucrative deal to tap oil well fires in Iraq. Most of all, it is poised for the main area of US spending in post-war Iraq: maintenance of the military - building houses, barracks, water systems, and operating everything from heavy equipment to mail and laundry"

RECONSTRUCTION CONTRACTS
Two Democrats Call for Scrutiny of Bidding to Reconstruct Iraq
By ELIZABETH BECKER

"wASHINGTON, April 8 — Two senior Democratic lawmakers asked today for an investigation into how the Bush administration is awarding contracts for the reconstruction of Iraq, with special attention to contracts already given to a subsidiary of Halliburton, the company once headed by Vice President Dick Cheney.

The lawmakers wrote to David M. Walker, comptroller general of the accounting office, saying that "because the administration has released few, if any, details about these contracts, little is known about the authority to enter into the contracts, or whether proper procurement procedures were followed."

The lawmakers questioned the contracts awarded by the Pentagon without competitive bidding to Kellogg Brown & Root, a subsidiary of Halliburton.

After noting problems with recent Brown & Root contracts — including questionable cost controls for work in the Balkans and $2 million in fines to resolve claims of fraud for work at a military base — the lawmakers asked why the administration had given it "a string of lucrative contracts over the last two years."

Asked why a nuclear power such as North Korea was being treated differently from Iraq, where hardly any weapons of mass destruction had been found, the deputy defence minister said: "Let's look at it simply. The most important difference between North Korea and Iraq is that economically, we just had no choice in Iraq. The country swims on a sea of oil."

Well, a case could be made that the big picture for war included lining the coffers of Halliburton.
