Pregnant, cavity, and really stressed...

I had just read the first 35 pages of this board, and all of the archives. So, I don't think my exact answer can be found on the forums currently. Hopefully one of you will be able to give me some advice.

One of my bottom front teeth (one of the sharp ones... what are those called again?) is hurting me. During a routine cleaning about two years ago, my dentist (also my cousin... ugh) chiped the enamel at the gum line very badly. Cut my gum, also. He promised me that it wouldn't cause me any problems and he would fix it at my next appointment (in 6 months).

Three months after this happened, it began to decay. I found a new and competent (mercury-free) dentist and got it filled with the new white-composite.

Now, two years later, I am 24 weeks pregnant and this same tooth has decay at the gum line. I inspect my teeth in the mirror daily, and this just showed up about two days ago. I floss, I brush all the time... I am so upset that this is happening.

It is heat/cold and air sensitive. It hurts to brush it, but I keep on brushing anyway.

I really want to get this fixed as soon as possible. My teeth aren't great, but they are the only ones I have and I really don't want to lose any- especially this one in the front.

I need to go in for a routine cleaning anyway, sometime after the 1st of October (new insurance kicks in then, I was supposed to go in Sept.). Can I get this fixed? How about whatever they give for pain? Is it safe? I have a high-threshold for pain, so I would be willing to have it drilled and fixed without anything, as long as it gets fixed.

I know my dentist (and pretty much everything I read online) will tell me this is fine. But, I want to know the truth, so I am asking here.

Thanks in advance, if anyone replies.

Local anesthesia tends to be the safest, since most of the medication stays at the site where it's needed and it doesn't go through the entire body. Novacaine is fine while pg and/or nursing (unless you're allergic to it.)

Get it fixed and don't stress about it. Having decayed teeth, and the worry and the pain, are worse for the babe than the treatment.

Get it fixed as soon as convenient, and DO NOT TRY to do it without painkillers. I tried that once when pregnant, and ended up being revived with smelling salts. Anyone who has ever had smelling salts can tell you that they're a LOT worse than novocaine! The baby will be totally safe, don't even think twice about it.
