DD is 4yo and has 3 cavities. One of them is a deeper cavity in her
lower back molar. The other two are on the top. Our family dentist
referred us to a Ped dentist because DD shows some signs of anxiety,
though overall she's pretty good w/ the work, she appears a bit
nervous to me too. Family dentist wanted to make sure she was with a
"child expert" for the work.

We went to visit the Ped dentist for a meet & greet and to do x-rays.
He thinks it is very important to get the molar filled and hopes to
do the other two upper teeth at the same time. This means she will be receiving novacaine in 3 quadrants of her mouth. (Poor thing.) The dentist suggested we treat her w/ valium (small dose) before her appointment to make it less stressful. I know that nitrous is an option too, but may be less effective than the valium. And we wouldn't want to have to stop mid-way because she's freaked out. I do plan to be with her in the room while it is being done.

I'm really torn between two things. One - wanting my daughter to have
healthy teeth and doing what it takes to make that happen and Two- over medicating my daughter unnecessarily.

I guess I'm leaning toward using the valium, but wondered if anyone can speak to residual effects, or other things we should be cautious of.

Thanks,
Denise
