Freaking out - chloryll hydrate?! And a mini rant...

Ugh, just got back from the dentist with my dd, Violet who is 20 months. It was not awful, but I would say pretty bad. She needs some fillings in her top teeth, thankfully not caps. Well, they want me to dose her with chloryll hydrate an hour before I bring her in. Then after dropping her off, I will go into the waiting room and watch a show and she will be wrapped in towels strapped down and have her fillings done.

Um, can you say NOT!!!

And I did get the you have to stop nursing spew, they said that this is what caused it, and when I came back at them with a bunch of statistics, they looked all flustered and were like, uh well, do what you think is right then. I'm sure they thought I was just some young poor mom with a minority (aka local) daughter who didn't know what the hell she was doing. I took abx for three months of my pregnancy and my dd had the WORST case of thrush that the ped had ever seen, for a whole year, but no, of course the nursing caused it. Having a completely acidic mouth would never cause cavities!

Ok, deep breath...I am getting more and more pissed off the more I think about it.

So I called about 10 more ped dentists and asked them about this protocal and they were like whoa, that sounds funky. None of them would let me go back with her during her treatment, but none of the other ones use sedation in the manner that this one did - and this is supposedly a very repudable dentist. So, I finally found a dentist who uses sedation in the office, but said I could maybe be there with her, depending on how she does. I am not opposed to sedation, I just want it to be done safely, yk?

I am so, so upset. Obviously I want her teeth to be fixed, but safety and not being completely traumatized are also important to me!

And what the heck is chloryll hydrate? I thought that it was some old fashioned funky drug from the 1800's. WTF? And yeah, I'm really going to dose my BABY with a tranquilizer alone, at home, not under the supervision of a medical professional. Yeah, that is real safe. gee, can you tell I'm upset?!

I was just glossing over the threads and noticed the bit about Chloral Hydrate in the title. I've never heard of dentist that uses this particular drug as a sedative but I really have no experience in cavaties in a baby/toddler. My dd did get sedated for an MRI, though, and they did use CH. Besides the usual concerns about allergic reactions, ect as with any drug, one of the side effects of CH is depressed respiratory function. So even if the child tolerates the drug they can still become apnic (slowed and/or sporadic respiratory rate) and can possibly stop breathing all together. I know when dd was sedated, they had to have an oxygen mask turned on and ready nearby in case they had to do "blow bys"- which she did receive. My dd was a preemie but it is standard practice to monitor all children when sedated. I'm glad you found a different dentist!
