Strong odor uncirc'd 7 mo old

I searched this topic and found one similar to it. After reading that thread I got worried for my son who was forcibly retracted at 2 and 4 months. The 4 month retraction caused his lose foreskin (which previously hung over and in front of his glans) to adhere tightly back down to the glans.

This in turn has caused a problem with his smegma. Before his (old pedy who has since been fired) premature retraction occured he had the white pearly smegma coming out everytime I bathed him. I have learned since that this is a sign that the skin is starting the process of loosening up.

Since that 4 month checkup in which he was forcibly retracted, very little smegma comes out. If it does at all it is in the form of timy white flecks.
Just yesterday I was changing him and noticed an odor. It smelled like "locker room jock smell". I recognised the odor because on occasion my oldest would get that from not "cleaning herself well enough".

He also had this dark redish line that started on the underside of his penis and went down to the base. My dh said that was nothing and that he had the same thing. I said "You don't have a foreskin" I didn't know if it was related to the odor.

I am so worried that his old Pedy caused this problem and that he will have a hard time with the scaring. Does anyone know what to make of this?

p.s. I have never attempted to retract him nor have let anyone else near him without me telling them that he is intact and to leave it alone

It sounds like it may well be a yeast infection. You could try an antifungal on it.

I think most males have that "line" but it may be that it looks redder due to the infection.

PS 'Uncircumcised' is not really correct; it's 'intact', 'natural', 'normal'. just fyi.

PPS Yeast is also common to circ'd penises (my circ'd dh has had them, my intact boys, never).

(How did he get forcibly retracted twice? Regardless, kudos for firing the incompetant malpractitioner!)

Yeah, he has an infection of some kind, I'd wager. A baby shouldn't smell like that. Do you have a pediatrician you can trust now? If so they can do a swab of the end of the foreskin, culture it and see what grows so they know what to treat it with. If not I'd probably try a yeast treatment myself, but that's just me.

The red line- I am inclined to say it's the midline of the body that everyone has. It's called the raphe, and it runs visibly down the underside of the penis and over the scrotum. I don't know why it's suddenly red.

If you can find a ped that is intact friendly or one that will at the very least respect the no retraction rule then get a culture done to see if there is a infection. Since he has a history of forced retraction he would be more suseptable to something growing in there were the raw wounds were. Or it could be just a simple yeast in that case otc monistate will work.

To do a culture all that is needed is the very tip of the foreskin to be swabed. Anything inside will be there as well. It is imparative that he is in no way retracted not even a little bit because if it is a infection and the skin gets microtears in it then it will have a way to enter. You can actually request a glove and you can be the one to hold his penis so the swab can be done.

My boys get that smell after they get really sweaty and it has been a couple of days since a bath -- the red line that runs underneath the shaft is normal -- both my babies have had that from birth. I would just give him a bath and dry him well, maybe give him a little diaperless time and keep an eye on it. If it doesn't look red or painful at all, I'd just assume he was fine unless the smell got worse etc.

Poor baby!

I second what everyone else has said, and just wanted to say that my son also has that red line all the way down the underside of his penis and on his scrotum. I had never seen it before, but it was also very visible in my 4D ultrasound when I was 29 weeks.

Yes he was retracted twice. The first time because I didn't know any better. The reason the Pedy was fired because I faxed him the guidelines on intact penis care and underlined the part about not retracting him.

The Dr., upon acknowledement of getting the fax, walked right over to him and retracted him a 2nd time right in front of me. : I was so upset that I have not taken him back. He now has an intact friendly Pedy.

I did give him a bath (he's 7 1/2 months) and the odor seems to have gone away. I give him baths about 3x's a week. Maybe he just needed a bath.
Thanks for the replies. I will keep an eye on it.

Carolyn, I do not say this lightly, but if I were you, I would take legal action against that doctor.

About the old Pedy... Yes he was sent the D.O.C. letter a few weeks ago. I was told that we could also send out letters to the state licensing board in 2 states (he practices in CT and MA) if we don't hear from him.
Dave at D.O.C. said it was a good idea to do this in case my son does have a problem in the future, then it will be documented. I really wish I knew of this site before I had my son: I didn't want to challenge the Dr. thinking that he knew what he was doing. It turned out he was sooooo wrong about caring for my intact son!
