HELP I need your opinions....

OK, so here I am on the brink of having supply problems!!! With my DS I experienced a drastic dip in supply when he was 3 months old. I think it was a combo of returning to work (3 consecutive 12 hour night shifts) and return of AF. I tryed all the herbs and nothing helped so I ordered Domperidone and that was the magic ticket! It was great, I could pump, my son was satisfied, all was good. I just couldn't wean off of it that easy. I was on it for a year. This time with my DD I anticipated this and when I returned to work was very carefull to pump a lot, drink MMT a lot.... drink water. So now my daughter is almost 5 months old and I have been back at work for 2 months, same shifts, it is bad but I have to do it. I had a good supply but it dipped when I returned to work and AF cam at 3 months agian. We breastfeed on demand, and co-sleep! This past week my supply is crap, I have tryed it all I have been drinking the tea, the herbs didn't help for my son so I have hesitated to spent the $ on them. HERE is my question!!! I have Domperidone in my house, 300 pills I think. It is tempting me. I really wanted to not have to use it, but I think I might be getting to that point. I just worry that it may be harder to get now ( I ordered from global drug) And I am sure I will be on it for a while. I have a big freezer stash form earlier on so I have not had to supplement with formula when I am at work.

I know you ladies have tons of experience so I hope you can give me words of wisdom.

Thanks and sorry so long.

So sorry you're stressed out about this!

To be honest, for a question about drug use, I wouldn't trust an answer from a stranger off the internet, no matter how well meaning. Why don't you contact a (board certified) lactation consultant about this? I'm sure she could tell you what you need to know.

I would imagine that since the dom worked before for you, it would again, but as for its shelf life and whether what you have now is still good, I don't know.

Good luck!

Thanks, I know that is is still OK the experation date is 2007. I agree about listening to just anyone off of the internet about medication use. I am a RN and I am working towards becoming a LC but I really am just looking for advice from these mamas who have been thru it! Thank you tho!

I just wonder IF giving the herbs a try again is worth it!

Anyone who takes them to boost supply, what herbs and in what amounts do you take?

Thanks

Do you nurse at least every three hours when you are not on shift? I know this may be hard when you want to rest from a long shift. I would concentrate on really nursing when you are home at least every three hours. Then when you are at work, try to pump at break time. Use only a hospital grade pump such as Madela Symphony, Lactina, or Classic. Pump in Style will not cut it. Take the herbs fenugreek - 3 capsules, three times daily, and goat's rue (Motherlove.com - one capsule 4x's daily). This has been discussed as the hot ticket for upping supply among lactation specialist. More Milk Plus is good, but it does not contain that much fenugreek. The fenugreek is really good for upping the supply, so you really need that. You can get it from Vitaminshoppe.com or any health food store. Give this a try and see what happens. I really think it should help. If you are nursing too far apart when you are home and not pumping at work, you will certainly see dive. If this does not work, you may have to resort to the domperidone. Hopefully you won't though. I wish you well!

Thank you. I actually use a hosp grade pump, we have them at work. I pump 3 times during a 12 hour shift. Addie nurses a bunch but I know what you mean, I take her to bed with me right when I get home. I am going to stop at Whole foods in the am to pick up herbs. How about blessed thistle??

Blessed thistle (3 capsules, 3 times a day) is helpful to many moms, so is Fenugreek (same dosage). Some moms swear by oatmeal too. www.kellymom.com has more information on galactagogues, if you're interested.

OK I bought some more milk plus and my order of breastea came today, I also ordered goats rue, blessed thistle and fenugreek, the more milk plus should be gone by then and i will start on the straight up herbs. I hope this all works. Now I have to figure out how to steep this huge breastea bag in one gallon of water when I dont have a gallon container : UGG. Well I am off all week so I will be at home nursing/pumping and herb taking. Thanks
