Oh, fun! I got hooked on Dexter a couple months back. My sister let me borrow the first two seasons on DVD and dh and I finished the third season a few weeks ago. I thought I'd hate the series (most shows with violent plots in them bother me), but I love it!
I haven't read the books, but I think I've heard that the first season of Dexter closely followed the first book, but past that, the books went off in a strange direction, so the show started writing completely on their own, with no plot ideas from the books.
