Kind of fun - we did the DNA test - Page 2

We're awaiting the placental pathology that will tell us if our boys are identical or not. We were SO sure they were fraternal and then they came out looking just alike except our first has a scab from the internal heart monitor. How long did it take for you to be able to see the difference?

A lot to shell out at once but nice to have that "know for sure" feeling.
well that doesnt work for us. both mommy and daddy have teh same blood type and so do all of our kids. and our doctor wasnt at all helpful when we asked about the placenta. there was one placenta but he just said he had no reason to test it. so now our only option would be to have their dna tgested right?

Wow. My doctor examined the placenta and said yep they are definately identical. Also the specialists told me as well that they are identical as well, because they shared one membrane and one placenta. Then in the NICU they said they have the same blood type so they are ID. And they really started looking alike at one year old. When they were born there was about a 2 lb difference so they looked nothing alike, so I had my doubts. But they still do have some beauty marks in differernt places and birth marks.

Don't you just love the all-knowing public?! Before I knew for sure I had quite a few comments made. One woman said I should know because of the sacs, etc. I told her that we now know that it doesn't exactly work that way and she says that she has twins (they were in their teens) and that her doctor told her that so it must be true. Okay...and science doesn't learn new things every day.....? Then there were the people who would try to guess on their own. Or the woman who after I found out and told her they were identical who said "Hmmmm....I don't think so!" Okay. Ohhhh! But the BEST ONE was when a woman asked what they were and I said identical. She looks at them and says.....are you ready for this......???? "But you don't have them dressed alike!" Uhhhh...okay.

Anyone else here think the Olsen twins need to get their DNA tested? They claim they are fraternal but I think they were given wrong info when they were born. No way those girls look THAT MUCH alike and aren't monozygotic!!

If there was only one placenta, they are ID. If twins share *anything* they are ID and even if they share nothing they can still be ID. Frat twins are alwas di-di.

I agree. They are totally identical. If they weren't identical, they wouldn't have both been able to play the same baby on Full House. I bet they were di/di so they were told they could not be identical. See, now I am being one of those annoying people that thinks they know more than the parents.

Yes! I have been saying this ever since I learned that identical twins could be di-di. If I had cash to throw around, I'd send them a test kit.

Wow! Must be year of the di-di girls! We are expecting ours in 8 weeks. I was told by the peri's u/s tech that our girls were definately frat because of the separate everything and when I mentioned this to my doc (who has twins herself) said, "Everyone that doesn't have twins knows something about twins, and it is usually wrong." I am finding that this is very true.

Our ultrasound tech siad the same thing (tat Di Di were always fraternal) The other thing people INSIST on is that only identical twins runs in families. and when you tell them it's jsut the opposite - that it tends to be fraternals that run along maternal lines they still disbelieve you.

Don't you know people on the street know all. Mine are identical and people will ask me are they Id or fra. I say ID and they say NO they can't be they look nothing alike! Then other people will come up to me and say OMG how do you tell them apart they are really identical! Then I Do twins run in your family?? Or did you get IV. I swear I'm going to wear a sign on my chest saying YES they are Twins. I know people are in Awe, but sometimes I think I get a little rude toward people with dumb questions.

I think I am going to make onesies for my girls that just say "Yes, we are."

Here's something to think about.

TWIN MYTH: Twins are exactly alike in every way.

TWIN FACT: No Twins are exactly alike. Identical twins look similar, but there are differences -- they may have subtle differences in the shape of their faces, heights, weights, etc. Fraternal twins can also look similar, but they may be different sexes and may look as similar as other siblings born on different days.

I have a t-shirt that says on the front "Before you even ask...." and on the back a long list of answers to the typical twin questions and comments. Things like "Yes, they are twins" "Yes, our hands are full"...that kind of stuff. It's cute.
