Don't forget to add that ovulation suppression (through birth control pills and shots) doesn't help either.

I suppose that Chelsea wouldn't be too thrilled if her mother tried to nurse her to prevent breast cancer right now? :

I hope she listens.

Ovulation suppression from bcp doesn't help reduce risk of breast cancer? Please give me some info on that. I teach anat. and phys. and i always teach that. Thanks for any info!

There's some evidence it reduces the risk of endometriosis and ovarian cancer, but there's studies that show the potential for INCREASED risk in breast and cervical cancer. However, there are conflicting studies that show no change in the risk of breast cancer. I'm not aware of any studies that show a DECREASE in the risk of breast cancer. And never mind the fact that a small percentage of young women on birth control pills have strokes for no apparent reason.

That is interesting. Not to go too OT, but I often wonder what a modern woman should do, if she doesn't want to have a child every few years during her reproductive lifetime. If she doesn't use hormonal birth control, the constant cycle of ovulation raises her risk for cancer. If she DOES use hormonal birth control to suppress ovulation, she raises her risk of stroke (and possibly OTHER cancers). Breastfeeding can only suppress ovulation for so long. I really do wonder what the optimal solution is to reduce the risk of reproductive/breast cancers, besides having a child every 2-4 years for decades.

No problem. I stopped using BCP after my 26 year-old friend had a stroke from hers. I will not consider any hormonal type of birth control. Fortunately, DH is very supportive of this.

I'd rather take the increased risk of cervical cancer, since an annual pap makes it easier to catch early.
