Breastfeeding references on ER tonight!

Whoohoo! I'm watching ER, and a conversation just happened concerning Abby and breastfeeding! I've missed the last few episodes, so I don't know if this has already happened in the past.

I was watching the scene, waiting, waiting, waiting. Abby said that mothering was "bizarre" and one of the doctors (the annoying one- I can't remember his name right now) said, "Sore nipples?" I thought maybe that would be the end of it, but when she said that the baby was hungry, he said something to the effect of, "Hey, I'm down with that. Breastfeeding is a beautiful, natural thing." Whoohoo! Of course, then she told him that he was getting a sneak peek at her boobs, so he left.

I wouldn't have BFed in front of him either

I was pleased with the reference.... although I'm wondering where the BFing is going to go "in a month" when she is back to work. I could imagine some good scenes of her trying to pump in the ER.

I was thinking the same thing!

I'm really glad that they have the character bfing. I think that as a medical show, it's important for them to show it as normal and healthy.

ER has shown other doctors and nurses breastfeeding/pumping when they come back to work. Nurse Hathoway breastfed the twins, and Mark's wife (can't remem ber her name) also breastfed and pumped. As a matter of fact, when Ming Na was on the show (can't remember the character's name), she breastfed the baby she gave up for adoption in order to give him the benefits of colostrum.

Thanks, eclipse! I stand corrected. I haven't watched ER in ages.

Yep ER for the most part has been very bfing friendly. I : so hard when Abby told Morris that he wasnt getting a sneak peak at her "tits" as she called them.

elizabeth was marks wife. ER tends to go with whatever the healthcare system currently promotes at the time... while its great for bfing, its bad for vaxes... anyone see the one about the kid who got measles? they conveyed the mother as extremely uninformed... that really p'd me off!

Yeah, that one made me mad too. I also got really po'd 2 seasons ago when they had a woman laboring on her back. I was yelling at the TV!

Someone beat me to it! I was hoping they'd continue the theme from last week, and I'm sure they'll show her pumping when she goes back to work. I know ER isn't great about all things AP, but got to give them kudos for promoting bfing!

"You're not sneaking a peek at my tits" had me laughing out loud.

Remember when Elizabeth gave Carter's pregnant lady The American Way of Birth? That ROCKED MY WORLD!!!! Carter was always more medically minded. . .Elizabeth was cool.

Yeah, but I'd consider that to be factually accurate for how doctors in the ER would've acted about it.

And Elizabeth did pump, although they showed her using a single Avent pump which wouldn't have been near enough to keep her supply for a working mother. They also had an episode where she had to scrub out of surgery because her breasts leaked through her gown and she "contaminated" the operating theater.

But overall, ER has been very pro-BF, especially for the mainstream.

Noah Wylie (Dr. Carter) is a big AP/gentle parenting advocate isn't he? He did a video for parenting/gentle birthing.

If you catch the 2 minute video previews next week on nbc's site it shows abby at a parenting class getting grief for not using a sling but using a bjorn.

However it doesn't look like it is going to be done positivly.

I'm so bummed we can't get our vcr working right to tape

Remember a couple seasons back when the blonde dr what was her name married the EMT and he said home and used an sns w/ their son! I thought that was interesting.

And don't forget that there was a reference to Carol Hathaway pumping once she was back at work . . . remember when Malucci came out of the staff lounge eating a bowl of cereal, and said "there was nothing in there but a bottle of milk and this, so . . ." Hathaway said "a BOTTLE of milk?" and then gave him a disgusted look.

Oh yeah!!! And Cosmo's mom...blonde girl who married Chuck...what's her name? She pumped too. In one episode they were super busy, and at one point she said something like, "I have to go pump NOW before my breasts explode!!!"

Her name was Susan (Sherry Stringfield). I thought the SNS thing with Chuck was totatly cool.

pumping

Tonight they had Abby's character pumping in the doctor's lounge because "her boobs were about to explode."

That was so funny- as soon as she was like Oh crap I said to myself- oops she just letdown! LOL! I wrote to promom asking that we do a 3ma thanking them for doing a great job- hopefully it will encourage them to keep it in the story line and have Abby bfing more.
Oh and I loved her comment at the end- about bonding with him when feeding at 11, 2 and 5 am. LOL!
