okie dokie, finally made the curtains for the kitchen (from tea-dyed muslin) and thought i would go on to do cloth napkins. but i am wondering what a good fabric for cloth napkins would be. we tried hemp terry and DH didnt like them (and i dont have a serger so they frayed a bit) but i would like to stay in the hemp family (jersey, muslin, something). so what do you guys think? anyone have any ideas?

I've never seen knit napkins. Maybe do 2 layers of the muslin, turned and topstitched?

What about a linen or hemp flax? I think you'll find them to be more napkin-like. (Like my new word?) I haven't done it myself, but a friend of mine brought it up the other day and we discussed a bit. You don't need a surger. The frayed edges could be intentional. If you baste the edge to keep the fray under control, you could fray it out about 1/2 inch or so to give it a little decor. Then if you like, you could tie little groups of fray together (it would need to be a little longer than 1/2 inch for that though.) I'm thinking linen or flax. Terry would be too much like a tea towl and knit would be soft, but I have my reservations.

I just bought some fabric at Joann's for napkins that is called homespun. Most of the selection was gingham and it has a definite weave you can see. Off course, I am intentionally making fringe around them so it might not be what you are looking for.
