Bottle recommendations for avoiding nipple confusion?

I plan to breastfeed exclusively when my son is born, but unfortunately, I will have to return to work and school about 3-4 weeks after he's born. I know it's "safest" to wait until at least 6 weeks before introducing the bottle, but that's absolutely not an option unless he's born a couple of weeks early. I just need recommendations as to which bottles are least likely to cause nipple confusion or cause the baby to perceive the bottle as "easier" so he doesn't go on strike. I've heard Avent and Dr. Brown's bottles (stage 1 newborn) are good, but figured I'd ask here as well in case there is anything else I should try.

I don't want our breastfeeding relationship to be sabotaged by the fact that I have to go to work and school in order to maintain a roof over our heads.

Help!!!

I've heard of people having success with Avent, Playtex nurser bottles and the wide neck Dr. Browns. There is also a bottle out there called "breastflow" I think it's by First Years. And there is also something called a breastbottle nurser. It is literally shaped like a b@@b.

I"m in the same boat - had to go back to school 1 week after babe was born!

I use the gerber NUK slow flow nipples - and my DD latches on those exactly the same as she does on the breast! She still prefers the boob though - she likes it straight from the tap!

I really liked the playtex nurser wide natural latch nipples. Sorry not sure exactly what they are called but they are similar to the avent ones only a little softer and the nipple isn't as long. The avents made ds choke a little and seemed nothing like the real thing IMO. You may have to try a few to see what your babe prefers but generally the bigger wide ones allow a more natural latch on the base of the nipple rather than the skinny part. hope that makes sense.

eta: here's a link, they have both silicone and latex.

The LC recommended Playtex Ventaire Wide so that's what we've used. He has had no problems going back and forth, he knows the good stuff!!

Oh, he had his first bottle at 4 weeks.

I use avent and we have one dr browns widemouth. Generally, they suggest a slow flow nipple and a wide mouth, to mimic the breast the best. think about what kind of system you want to use, though. I now pump into avent bottles and store in them too. My goal was to use one bottle for the whole process rather than the waste of bags and bottles and pouring and whatnot.

we also have a second nature bottle, dh says that ds does not choke on milk with it like he does on regular bottles and on the boob (overactive letdown), so that's a thought. But i don't know if you can store in those.

I am with you. We gave my ds his first bottle at 3 weeks and he has never had trouble. We started using the Paytex Ventaire, the wide bottles.

Thanks for the responses!! I really appreciate it!

I'll probably buy a few of both the Avent and Playtex VentAire initially so I can let him decide which he prefers. Hopefully he'll be okay with one of them or I'll have to try out different types.

Next question... when should we start introducing bottles? A week before I go back to school? A few days?

Good luck! We used Avent with DD, but we also tried Dr. Brown, the breastbottle, second Nature, Gerber's Nuk and so on. . . I found the wider neck to be better in general, but she hated all of them!! LOL!
I discovered AFTER DD stopped taking bottles (when I stopped working out of the home), a product which I think would be ideal, Nuby. It is still the only sippy cup she will drink from, and they make bottles too- they are supposed to emulate the nipple best.

Here's a link. . .

Just a quick note about the Avent ones - be sure to follow the assembly instructions closely. Pull the nipple through the ring, put the cap on, and then screw the nipple/ring/cap onto the bottle itself. Neglecting this will result in caregiver and child wet! Once I figured that part out we had zero problems with them leaking.

My LC recommended the Playtex Natural Latch, also.

We used Dr Browns when dd was getting bottles. She did fine with them, but at 4 months she stopped taking bottles at all. We tried every kind and gave up. :P

oh yeah, and if it leaks, don't tighten it, loosen it!! I know, seems counterproductive, but that's the way they fit.

so has anyone used or like the boob bottle - can't remember what it's called - the breastbottle?

I had no problems with the J&J ventair (not sure if that is the exact name) with two of our children. They would not take the avent or dr. browns at all!

After trying:

The Breastflow,
The Breast Bottle,
Playtex (all of them),
Dr. Brown's,
Gerber,
Soothie, and
Avent,

Dillan finally decided she liked the Avent the best. I think I spent about $200 trying different bottle systems, and I'm sure I left out a few.

Good luck!!!!

Someone recommended it on a Yahoo Group I belong to, but when I looked it up it was like $30 for one of em... I can't afford that.

It's made by Adiri - www.adiri.com
