Forgotten (milk) kefir. Grains still viable/salvageable?

So . . . I just found a "present" in the back of the fridge. My jar of kefir. Grains in whole milk.

Um. I can't remember the last time I had kefir. I intended for this to go dormant for just a week. Apparently, I forgot I had it. It's been there since at least early to mid July, without milk changes.

Now, I know--plenty of folks are in the "if in doubt, throw it out" camp. I want to know if the grains can be salvaged. Can I just rinse them well and discard the first fermentation? Should I start over with fresh grains?

I appreciate any thoughts and suggestions.

Mine have been in the same milk for a few weeks. I'm wondering the same thing. I just can't consume the stuff as fast it gets made and I got behind when I went on vacation.

Suzy -- I would bet a good bit of money that yours are fine. Jocelyn, not so sure. The best way to know if to get them started again. Jocelyn, if you've got a source of grains near you, I think I'd tend to start over. But I think we've had a story or two here of grains getting revived under similar circumstances.

I've kept mine in the fridge without changing the milk for 6 months and they were still fine. I rinsed them in fresh milk, and brewed a small amount for a short time (about 1 cup milk and only about 12 hours), then started brewing like normal. They revived quite fine.

Well, as soon as I can brave opening the jar, I'll try them out. I'm 12w today and the thought of smelling *fresh* milk is not real high on my list on favorite things to do.

I must be brave! I'm craving kefir creamsicle shakes something awful!

Thanks!

Holy cow.

Was it fine on the first batch?

No but the second was good.
