Where can I get kefir grains (and kombucha, and fil mjolk)?

For those of you who do culturing at home, where did you get your kombucha, keifer, and/or whatever else you use?

I am very much interested in starting kombucha, kefir, and Fil mjolk (creme fraiche). I've found that I can buy them online, but it will cost me $60 including shipping! : I just can't afford that, and my DH would think that I was crazy for spending that much of our food budget. I thought that maybe I could get a different culture every few months, but shipping is $11 each time, and that adds up...

Anyway, where/how did you get yours? Do you know of any places that might have them for a bit cheaper? Is it possible to find clutures in health food stores? I live pretty close to Seattle, and perhaps a store somewhere there carries them...

Check out the 1st sticky at the top of this page. Some mamas will send grains and scobies for cost of mailing. I got my scoby from xenabyte for $4.50 and am thrilled with the KT it produced

My kefir grains came from a local freecycler who posted the offer on our local group. A local store sells kefir grains, but they're *very* pricey.

Otherwise, lists like the sticky above or just word of mouth. It's pretty easy to find someone who is a kombucha or kefir fanatic where I live.

Yep, I'm one of those mamas who will send out grains and/or a scoby for cost of shipping. (And I got mine from xenabyte, too. ) I don't have milk kefir grains at the moment -- I've been using The Body Ecology powder for milk -- but I do have water kefir grains and a kombucha scoby all ready to go, and I'll send both to you anywhere in the U.S. for $8. Just PM me if you're interested.
