I went out last nite and got a stack of washclothes at target for 3.99 for 12 , I was planning to use for wipes .. i cut them into 4 smaller squares and ran a few thru the wash and of course they shredded on the unserged edges .. so I was wondering if anyone knows if i can use fray check for that , I do not have a serger ... what else can I use for homemade wipes ..hoping for all of us to throw around ideas !
I have cut up some old gerber pf ,they are stringy too on the edges ... so just looking for ideas !! :

I use baby washclothes, they are the perfect size and I got a bag of 30 for a few dollars.

I bought a yard and a half of soft flannel and cut it up with pinking shears. It cost maybe 2 or 3 dollars and I got about sixty wipes out of it. It frayed some the first couple of washes, but now they're great! The flannel is so soft and I actually like them much better than terry wipes I bought when we first started using cloth for dd.

Fray check makes fabric really stiff on the edge. I think it would be scratchy. You could try zigzagging the edge.

I cut up a Target Circo receiving blanket to make 16 wipes. They are fraying in the wash too. I like the idea of buying cheap baby washcloths--think I'll try that.

What do you guys put in them (if you don't use a spray bottle)? I put a squirt of Johnson's Baby Wash (not soap) in a bowl and added water, dipped them in, rang them out, and put them in a sposie wipe container. It's the same wash I use for their baths, although there's probably something gentler that I don't know about... I used the container for 4 days before washing and on the 4th day the unused ones still smelled nice and fresh.

I used flannel as well. Some left over flannel from making some diapers and then some flannel recieving blankets and did double layer of flannel and zigzaged them together. they are a little frayed around the edges but they aren't fraying anymore and they work great!!

I've been doing cloth wipes for about 6 weeks. The flannel wasn't soft enough, it gave my little prince a red bum from the rubbing.
I tried laundering them separately with fabric softener but it was such a hassle.

I bought a fleece blanket at a consignment event and cut it into smaller squares and right now that's working perfectly. His redness is gone. It didn't need to be serged or sewed or anything, no frazying or frazzling.

I made my own without a serger - I used one layer of flannel and one layer of velour, sewed them right sides together, then turned them inside out and topstitched. I really like them.

We keep them dry in a basket under the bathroom sink, then wet a few at a time, wring them out, and put them in the wipes warmer that way. No solution, just water.

I just hacked up an old, ripped flannel sheet (already very soft). I didn't even use pinking shears, although I've heard that would have helped the edges unravel less. In any case, they don't unravel horrendously, are very soft, and were practically cost-free.

To wet them, I just keep a peri bottle (like from after giving birth) in the changing table filled w. plain water.

Have fun!

I make wipes too!

and I've even gone a step further...

Many may think it crass, but after washing poopy diapers by hand, not much phases me anymore. I call them "Fanny Friends." They are reusable toilet cloths, also out of recycled flannel, or terry or whatever is soft and absorbent. Sweatshirts work well. I used to sell them at my booths along with my sweater pants and soakers from reclaimed and reconstructed sweaters. But they are not as much fun to make.

However, they came with a clean wipes dispenser and a few soiled wipes receptacles and all are machine washable and so handy! No more TP in this household, except for guests who may not be so openminded. The dispenser fits on normal wall mounted toilet paper roll holders and voila! If you wouldn't use disposable on your tot, why for yourself?

ps...if I knew how to use all those bouncy smiley things I sure would.

Free your heel, free your mind! e

I used some flannel I had lying around the house AND some old washcloths I had lying around. I cut them into 5x9 inch squares. Then holding once piece of flannel and one piece of washcloth - right sides together, I stitched around all the sides leaving a little opening to turn the fabric to right sides out.

Once turned I closed the hole and then topstitched all the way around. These washed up perfectly and after the seam allowance are around 4"x8". My first born isn't here yet - so I am not sure how they work ... but so far the seem to be just peachy - and it was a great way to get around not having a serger!
