Books to read?

For those of you with early readers, what books do you recommend? I need something very basic that a beginning reader can read by himself. It would be an absolute bonus if there was some natural family stuff in there. Or Dads doing childcare, cooking, cleaning like it was no big deal.
TIA!

Bob Books. No NFL in them though.

My 6yo started out with Dick and Jane. There's a new anthology that combines the 3 books into one big volume. Lots of fun and gives them reading confidence as well...

I don't know the age of the child or specific level you mean by "early reading." My six year old is reading the Magic Treehouse series by Mary Pope Osborne like crazy right now. As a teacher, I tend to think of these as rather junky, "formula" type books (in the series, they're all pretty much the same) but they interest young readers because the sibling travel to all different geographical locations and times in history, and there is a little non fiction learning to be had in addition to the adventure aspect. But, if you're talking a 4 year old just learning to read, I second BOB books...the Magic Treehouse are easy-ish chapter books.

Thanks Mamas! I will head to the library to check out some of these suggestions. Teachma-to clarify, my ds is 4.5 and just learning. We are doing the book Teach Your Child to Read in 100 easy Lessons and he LOVES it I am so pleased because I grew up reading and really want that for my kids. He should be done with that around Christmas time and I thought it would be neat to buy him some little beginner books for Christmas that he can read all by himself.
