pink eye ??

Today I picked up DS from preschool and they said his eyes and nose had been running a lot and that I should get it checked out. So I took him to the Dr. and he said it could be a cold, allergies or pink eye but it is hard to tell. To be on the safe side he gave me a prescription for topical antibiotics.

I have seen pink eye, his eye is not at all red. We have not (as far as I know) been exposed to pink eye.

My question is; should I wait a cuople days before giving DS antibiotics? Or give it to him...

maybe some of you Moms have experience with this. We just started preschool in September and have been sick ever since.

Well first of all I just want to let you knwo you are not alone, my 2 year old just started mother day out 2 days a week and she has been sick on and off since she started in August... our lateest sickness is croup : , not fun, but my ped. said it would take about 6 months for her immune system to get used to being exposed then she wouldnt be getting sick as often...

As for your question about the pink eye I would wait until your DC started showing signs of pink eye, redness and/or constant eye bugers that come back shortly after being wiped away, before giving the eye drops. (My 7 month old currently has pink eye and when squirting breast milk in her eyes didnt work I resorted to the eye drops... its clearing up now)

I hope your little feels better soon!

Yeah, you'll know it's pink eye when his eyelids are sealed shut by mucus. If that doesn't happen, he probably doesn't have pink eye.

If you are nursing him or another nursling, put some breastmilk in his eyes and give him some of your milk (straight from the breast woudl be best, but pumped is okay). That will help, assuming you have some.

thanks for the scoop! It is not stuck together shut. I kinda don't think it is pink eye.
Our Dr. said the same thing about immune system taking 6 months or so to aclimate. Yuk...

When ds was that age, we got pinkeye with every cold. He'd wipe his nose with the back of his hands, and then kind of keep going over his eye.

Wash his eye out well tonight with a warm wash cloth. If the gunk comes back, it probably is pink eye. If not, probably not.

No breastmilk, he is 3 1/2 weaned himself at 20 mo... I wish I were breastfeeding him as it would stave off these microbes that are reeking havoc on his little system.

Oh man... your son got pink eye with every cold?! So sorry
I did warm compress it tonight and it seemed ok when DS went to bed. We'll see in the morning.

Ugh... pink eye. I was easily suseptable to it and got it several times a year, even through high school.

I went to my eye doctor, a normal doctor, and got eyedrops for my eyes. Cleared it up the next day.

I'd hold off for now and see that it really is pink eye. We don't want to create more super-germs!
