Home Again and Birth Story

We are home! Thanks to everone for the well wishes, it was nice knowing others were thinking of us on Friday. The surgery was picture perfect, and strange as this sounds, very fascinating. The docs were great, and DH was a in super daddy mode all weekend. S here's the breakdown:

Kieran Turner (Baby A) born at 1:47pm 6lbs. 10 oz. 20.5 inches long, breech presentation from a wedged position. He came out hollering and had apgars of 9 and 9.

Owen Jeffrey (Baby B) born at 1:49 pm 6lbs. 3oz. 21 inces long, turned head down as soon as his brother was moved and attempted to engage in my pelvis. The doc had to hold him in place while the resident cut A's cord! He was also loud and had apgars of 9 and 9.

Here's the Cute:

DH was encouraged to join the boys at the warmers as soon as they were out and he got some cute pics. The nurse apologized for me not being allowed to BF in the section room, but the table is too narrow, and the room was really too cold for little babies.

DH was gladly given both babes as soon as they were wrapped and diapered (in our cloth!) and he held them up for me to see. Owen failed the sugar test at 10 minutes, and had to be given a supplement, but I was consulted first, and DH gave it to him. We all went to recovery together and I got to BF immediately. Kieran's sugar crashed at 30 minutes and he was given a supplement by DH since colostrom was not holding him stable.

I was able to go to a room in less than an hour and the babies stayed with me the entire time. The nurses were absolutely thrilled to have a twin mom that kept her own babies exclusively in her room, even overnight, even for lab work, of which there was quite a lot. Both babies had a little jaundice and we were allowed natural phototherapy in the room since it was nice and sunny, so no biliblankets or sun lamps for my boys. It is sad to think that I am in the minority of moms to do this. Especially since the nurses advocate for it and will literally do whatever they have to do to assist a new mom with infant care.

The kiddos are both champion BFers, although Owen would not latch until my milk came in. He let his brother do all of the hard work getting the supply up, and now he is better at latching than Kieran. While both lost weight initially they each gained about 5 oz. yesterday which impressed all of the staff, especially the lactation consultant. Both boys like to sleep at the same time, so I am remarkably well rested for 4 days pp with twins, and I feel VERY lucky indeed. We have begun to dabble in simultaneous nursing, but they don't often cue to feed at the same time. I let them dictate the schedule right now. They cluster feed between 11pm and 2 am and then seem to be good until around 6am! I'll take that thank you!

I am personally having a good recovery. I find it strange to have belly pain, and after pains, but no perineal pain. Not that I am complaining. It is just weird. I am still taking the percoset for the pain, but am weaning to just motrin this week. I was allowed to eat almost right away, and I think that has helped so much, but I won't lie, SATURDAY WAS HELL! I almost passed out twice from pain because I thought I could handle taking 1/2 the recommended dose. I canged my mind and I am now fine. I am allowing myself a lengthy laying in, and I was very grateful for the privacy and quiet of my hospital room. Now that I am home it is a little tougher, but my only job for at least the next week is nursing and healing.

I was given a HUGE compliment this morning. Two of my nurses thanked me for educating them, and validating their own personal beliefs with my parenting style. They loved to see the babes in cloth, exclusively BF and worn around the room in a sling (by DH). They were really impressed with my AP mom friends who came to hold babies so DH could go home during the days to sleep and take care of our dog. They loved to see how calm I was and how relaxed the babies were because of it. They were sad that so many of their moms, especailly the multiples moms refuse to BF, I mean even to try, and mindlessly take any pill given to them without question, and not even really try to care for theor own babies since the nurses are there to do it for them.
It just goes to show, that even a hospital witht the best of intentions cannot change the attitudes and practices of uninformed or unattached parents.

Mamajody,

I love your birth story, your attitude, and the adorable pics. I even showed the twins to my husband just now, since he has been kept up-to-date over dinner with births on our message board What I like is how you don't make the medical staff out to be cruel, but rather emphasize how positive they were towards your parenting style. You are right - the responsibility of education and hard work falls mostly on the parents...not on the medical staff. An uneducated, uninformed, and resistant parent is a challenge both in labor and after, so no wonder standardized care tries to by-pass any effort from the mother or parents. I am always thrilled to read about the kind of support and care you received. Congratulations again! They are amazing boys

Jody,
They are so beautiful Mama. Congratulations...

What a blessing your whole birthing experience was...despite the surgery. Thank you for telling us your birth story and that a hospital birth can be positive.

I'm glad you're home with your little ones safely in your arms. Are they identical cause they sure look like it...so adorable.

wow! What a great story! Your nurses sound fabulous! Your babies are beautiful! Congratulations!!!!

(Don't rush recovery, mama... I often wonder if I would have recovered better in the long run,, had I let myself heal better in the short term after birth. You just went through major surgery... take it easy!, for at least two to three weeks, not just one. )
