Shameless show-off!

I have 14 or so pockets cut out and I decided they were too boring the way they are, so I decided to spruce them up with scrap fabric.

Here's what I came up with so far:

Back of diaper on my teddy bear model:

Front:

On DS:

Front, showing the rise changes:

I just cut out the fabric with pinking shears and straight-stitched it on with an extra layer of PUL behind it for durability and hopefully extra waterproofness. I haven't had a chance to really try it (overnight is the ultimate test and that won't happen until at least tomorrow night because I have to wash and dry it first) but I'll update once I find out if that cotton square wicks or not.

Wow you are incredibly creative. I love it
What pattern are you using. I couldn't quite figure out the orange snaps down the front along with the velcro.

I think it's a one-size diaper. Are you using your own pattern? I've been looking for a one size diaper to make to give to friends.

Yes, it's a one-size and it's my own pattern. OS patterns are not that hard to make. Just decide how big you want the biggest setting to be and start there. I chose a rise of 19 inches and waist of 22". My son is quite the chunk, and I expect future children to be chunky as well, so I need something that will truly fit for a long time. Then you just sketch out the pattern, add a seam allowance, make sure it's symmetrical, and cut it out.

The first row of snaps (the studs) is just less than an inch from the bottom of the aplix. The second and third row (sockets) are about 1 3/4" from the first row and each other. This makes stretched rises of 19", about 17" and about 15.5".

Always add crossover tabs for the smallest babies.

When you do the leg elastic, only bring it up as far as the bottom set of snaps. If you bring it up further, when you fold down for the smaller rises, it folds over on itself and looks uncomfortable for baby.

That's about it really.

If anyone is interested in exact dimensions of my pattern (not including seam allowance):

Rise: 19"
Back: 17"
Front: 9.5" (aplix is just under 9")
Crotch: 6.5" (might be better at 6" though)

The smallest setting is not small enough for newborns. I think the waist and thigh may be, but the rise would probably be overwhelming. This is something I probably wouldn't bother with until the kid is starting to truly outgrow newborn stuff. Maybe 10-12 lbs? But my son is about 29 lbs and still has a bitof growing room. I'd say he'd outgrow this at about 32-34 lbs (totally guessing here). Slimmer kids would definitely get to 35 lbs in it.

One tip for the patch on the back....do not, I repeat, DO NOT, do it the way I did with the pinking shears and straight-sewing it on. It might have been better with a smaller stitch, but it started unraveling past the stitching in the wash. I'm just going to zig-zag the heck out of it so it'll stay on, but it will probably look crappy. In the future, I plan to NOT be lazy and actually fold the edges under and sew in on that way.

I can't believe I though that would work.

I have yet to try it over night still. I'll fix it tonight and try it and report back if it wick or not.

So how did it work? If it works well, I might have to borrow your directions to play around with.

I completely forgot about updating this thread! I've been using this diaper almost exclusively as an overnight diaper (our other night-time diapers had just about had it) and the little patch doesn't wick at all. Even if the diaper gets so saturated that it wicks out the legs, the patch stays dry.
