The hospital where I delivered had two birthing tubs. You just had to sign a release form beforehand, indicating that you understand the risks, etc.

You should check with your hospital to see if they have tubs!

I was signed up for a water birth, but since my water had broken some time before getting to the hopsital, they wouldn't allow a water birth. The shower was a nice runner-up to the tub though!

I second checking with the hospital...my local hospital (in a pretty small town) has a birthing tub and a nearby hospital just renovated their birthing suites to include tubs in every room.

I have heard of some hospitals allowing people to rent medical grade birthing tubs, but that was several years ago so litigation may have brought about changes there. But it would be worth asking.

My first appt. is this afternoon, and I'm 7 weeks tomorrow. With 2 previous m/c, we'll be doing an ultraound this afternoon to see what's there. Wish me luck, I'm so nervous.

Stacie, how exciting! Keep us posted...

Good luck, I hope it goes well. I hope you see a nice healthy little baby on the u/s today. Let us know how the appointment went!

I had my first appointment today with my HB MW, she is great Everything looks good and my uterus is a little big. We tried to hear the heartbeat but no luck, it's still too early. We'll check for it again next month.

Well, I had my first sort of appointment today. Dh and I went to the borth center to talk with the midwife. He's been way nervous about me giving bith anywhere other than in a hospital. Fortunately, he's much, much more relaxed after the visit this evening. My mw was fantastic, answered every question either he or I could come up with, and had tons of facts to calm down my dh. So, now the fun of making my real first appointment.

We had a meet and greet withy our midwife this past monday. She was very nice and I think we will work really well with her. We are planning to meet again before Thanksgiving to hear the heart beat. I am so excited to here that. I imagine it will be amazing! We do have to gather a rather large sum of money by then (large for us anyway) and I am nervous about that. My dh is so calm about it though and says we'll figure it out.

Good news! Saw a heartbeat today at my first appt., and baby was also measuring right on target. What a relief: I have another appt. in 2 weeks where I'll do another ultrasound - I'm not in the clear, yet; I'm only 7 weeks tomorrow. Still feeling :Puke, which is only small consolation with me. (I was very sick with my first m/c).

Good luck to all of those going to their first appts.!

Tomorrow Afternoon

I found out last night and made an appointment with a Doctor someone recommend. Just reading the various options in other cities makes me jealous. Why couldn't we have a birthing center within a reasonable distance frommy home. Anyway, really wanted to do the tub thing but I am worried that I might be high risk since I am 210 pounds, 34 yrs old with a family history of miscarriages. So I know it's only 4 weeks but I thought I would at least take the opportunity to meet with a potential doctor. (My health insurance doesn't cover preventative medicine, only when there is an actual issue- so I haven't had a physical in years. Anyway, this will be a good check in.

Great news, BellaLuv!

And, Iamhappy2BAmom, I hope your insurance is more helpful with your birth provider. I think that, usually, pregnancy is the one time that it is easier to find assistance if you can't afford health care. As warped as our system is at making good preventitive care hard to get, it seems like at least pre-natal care is understood to be a real cost-saver (if not valued simply as a life-saver!)

While I sometimes feel like my insurance is nickel-and-diming me to death, during pregnancy with my DS, they didn't even charge the usual co-pay for any visit. I was amazed by that.

Of course, we still spent our own money to hire a birth doula (labor assistant), which was the SMARTEST THING WE EVER DID, and that was not covered by insurance...

Does anyone know if you can use pre-tax money from a Flexible Spending Account to pay a doula? Jilian? Last pg, I didn't know during our benefits election stage that I would be pg (DS born 11/2003), but, at least this time, I can sort of plan for next year. June is a GREAT due date month.
