Help!!!! I'm Totally Lost And Due In 5 Weeks!!

Okay, I'm getting a little frantic now because I know there is a connection between vaxes and the onset of autism, and that children can even DIE from adverse reactions to their vaxes. I don't want to eliminate vaccinating all together because I do feel some of them are important, but I would like to delay them.... Can another experienced momma tell me what your vax schedule looked like for your children. I.E. which ones you completely eliminated, like pertussis, why, and at what age your child received the other ones. I have finally found a doctor who agrees with delayed vaxing so I'm ecstatic about that... now I just need to know WHAT TO DO!!!!! Please help.

I would suggest researching each of the diseases that are vaxed for, and compare that info with what the side effects of the vaccine can be.
Most of the illnesses really aren't that scary if you know how to treat them.

Sorry, I'd add more but DS 2 is fussing.

Do I just go to the CDC website to find out the chance of occurrence for these diseases????? I feel so lost when it comes to this and I just want what's best for my little boy.

The only vaccine you have to worry about for the next 3 months is the Hep B that they will attempt to give at the hospital. Are you Hep B positive? If not, then you can immediately rule this one out. It's a blood borne illness that is common among injection drug users and those who have unprotected sex. If that doesn't sound like your infant, than you can push this one off until later. That leaves you 3 months to research the 2 month shots:

Hep B (usually given again at 2 months)
IPV (polio)
DTaP (diptheria, tetanus, pertussis)
Rotavirus (this is a brand new one)
Prevnar (invasive pneumococcal disease)
Hib (Haemophilus Influenza type B invasive disease)

At the top of this forum there are some stickies. In one of those stickies is a link to the CDC Pink Book. This online book contains relevant information for each disease.

You have to decide for yourself what kind of schedule to follow. Each family evaluates the risks differently. For example, you mentioned not doing the pertussis vaccine, but many families feel this one is important to do on schedule, since pertussis is only a real risk for the first 6 months. Some people will decline the Hib and Prevnar vaccines, because those diseases are rare in breastfed infants. Others will take them because they fear meningitis. Some will decline IPV since polio has been eradicated in this hemisphere for years and years and it causes mostly asymptomatic infection anyway. Others will do it on schedule because they're terrified of polio. Some people decline Hep B because it's mainly an STD. Others accept it on schedule because they honestly believe their child could catch it off a toilet seat or something. Only you can determine what you believe the risks are. There is a thread somewhere in here about what schedules other mamas use, so you might want to find that one, but in the end, it doesn't really matter, because you're the one that has to live with the decision based on what you estimate the risks to be.

My son is 16 months--and he is not vaccinated.

We decided that we would put off any decisions and any vaccinations (if we vaccinate at all) until he is two years old. When my son turns two we're going to have the "big talk"--and we're going to decide whether we vaccinate or not. I'm leaning toward no vaccinations ever, and my husband still seems worried about it--so we're probably going to have to go through each disease and each vaccine in detail and make hard decisions about each of them. It's really a personal decision--a family decision.

Educate yourself on the diseases and the vaccines available for the diseases.

Vaccination is not an emergency, so don't feel rushed to get them in--you can always vaccinate later--but you can't "take back" a vaccine.

Here's my current compliation of my research:

Does that help?

To find incidents of disease:
MMWR: Weekly Reports
http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/mmwr_wk.html (Go down to: “Notifiable Diseases/Deaths in Selected Cities Weekly Information”—and what is displayed is how many cases have been reported so far this year…and how it compares to last year—continue down and there’s more detail as to location)

You can also check your state health department for information about incident of disease.

To search for vaccination reactions:
Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS):
http://vaers.hhs.gov/

National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP)

Don't worry I didn't know anything about vaccination before the baby was born. I just refused the vacines at the hospital and took my time to figure out what I was going to do.

There's no immediate need to worry about this. First of all, make sure you have found a family doctor or pediatrician who will at least TALK to you about this. I did not do that before my son was born and I spent a lot of frantic time looking for a doctor.

Next, get some books, written by people who will tell you BOTH sides of the story. I do not believe vaccines are inherently bad. I am not anti-vaccine. But, I do think there is a difference between what is best for the public health and what is best for my individual child. That is, I think, the crux of this whole debate. At least in my experience.

Will your child be at home with you? Breast fed? How long? This will play into your decision as to what's best.

My son is 10 months old, and we have, as yet, not vaccinated him. He is home with me, is breast fed, and is not exposed to any other children. If and when he is vaccinated, it will be for things that I feel are relevant to him and his best interest. NOT what the CDC or anyone else thinks is best for the public. You have to wrap your mind around that concept to understand where some of the doctors are coming from. They feel they are at WAR with disease. Just like in any war, casualties are expected and accepted. That is why they feel so strongly. Understand that and it will save you a lot of grief. It's not that they don't care about your child or want to hurt your child. They have just been conditioned to believe that vaccines are what is best for the greater good--- and in some cases, they have been. Others, not so much.

Read What Your Doctor Might Not Tell You about Your Children's Vaccinations by Dr. Stephanie Cave-which includes a delayed schedule, by the way. Read Don't Vaccinate Before you Educate by Dr. Mayer Eisenstein. Get Dr. Jay Gordon's DVD on Vaccinations. You and your husband can sit and watch that, and I think his logical approach will help you see that there is a middle ground that you can happily walk.

Take your time and do what is best for YOUR child. Don't let anyone here or in any doctor's office or on any playground intimidate you into doing (or NOT doing) anything. Know what you are dealing with as far as the diseases, and know what the benefits and risks are of the vaccine.

Happy researching!
