Raw cheese and breastfeeding?

Today, I finally bought my first raw thing! A tiny wedge of raw cheese (that cost $5!!!) I was so excited. I was wearing dd at the checkout, and the lady asked me if I was breastfeeding, (I am), and said that raw milk cheese wasn't recommended to breastfeeding moms. I told her we wanted it anyway. I know that listeriosis is a risk for pregnant women, but what about breastfeeding?

I eat it all the time and haven't had any problems so far. I also drink raw milk with no problems.

No, I'm not worried about consuming it, I just wondered what prompted her to make that disclaimer?

Probably misinformation, you know how one person says something and someone hears it differently. Either that or she just makes things up based on what she percives as fact.

BTW how is the cheese??

I just had a taste, and it's delicious. It's just the right blend of shaprness and mildness.

It's this cheese: http://www.tpforganics.com/new/content/view/21/88/

I'm not sure it was misinformation, though it's entirely possible. I mean, I bought it directly from the farm (though I'm sure she wasn't the farmer, she was likely a new employee). It was prolly a CYA thing, but I wondered who told her to say it, and why.

I'm guessing a CYA thing. That way if you did happen to get sick somehow, she could say that they warned you that you shouldn't eat it and tried to prevent you from buying it, yk? It sounds very good too!

I have heard that too -- they tell you not to eat raw egg, raw cheese, raw milk...the benefits far outweigh any possibility of risk in an otherwise healthy woman.

That's what I thought. Thanks!

?? how would it possibly affect a nursing babe?? i dont get it.

A lot of people seem to think that b/c something is "dangerous" while pregnant, it must be while you're breastfeeding, too. She'd probably tell you you can't eat sushi while nursing either. I think people are nuts w/ the fear mongering. I am very healthy and have a healthy immune system. I ate sushi while pregnant.

Shoot, Persephone! I just noticed you got your cheese from Trader's Point. Are you in Indiana? Raw milk is illegal here, so their fromage and milks/yogurts are pasteurized (although pasteurized as little as they can get away with.) Did you check to make sure the other cheese is raw? Is it really? I keep meaning to make a trip down there to check out their store, etc. At this rate, it won't happen till next spring. LOL! We do get all of our milk and yogurt from them, though. No one carries the cheese here, other than the fromage. (we're in the Lafayette area.)

Yes, they're about a 10 minute drive from me. I was at the Farmer's Market. I love their milk, and apparently, pasteurizing doesn't get rid of the activator X, so that's the best we can do here in IN. The cheese was made from raw milk though, it said "raw" on the package and like I said, the saleslady told me that I shouldn't have it while breastfeeding. I love that place! Actually, I'm going to go eat the rest now!
