Anyone know of a gentle non-violent pirate story appropriate for 3 year olds? I want to have a pirate theme for my 3 year old ds's birthday and hand out the book as a party favor. I know the whole pirate thing is contradictory to gentle but they don't know that pirates aren't gentle yet-you know what I mean? Thanks for any help! Angie

The Man Whose Mother Was a Pirate is a nice picture book and funny! Mahy? is the author, not sure.

The Jolly Mon (yes, Mon)by singer Jimmy Buffett and his daughter Savannah is nice......a rasta man who sails a boat and defeats pirates and plays the guitar.....

I don't remember if either of these has any scary parts, none that I remember, you would want to check them out first.

Tough Boris by Mem Fox is the story you want.

It's got incredible illustrations... it's about a tough, massive, scary pirate... who cries and cries after his parrot dies. It's SUCH a great sensitive story! s

My son loves this story. I often give it away for birthday presents and children love it! It's perfect!

lol, i just got them today. ds insists that tough boris ate his parrot (i keep saying 'no, no, he loves his parrot! he's crying!)

and when i told him the other book was 'jolly mon', he thought it was short for 'monster' and is too scared to look inside. sigh.

two is such an amazing age

and no, he doesn't want to eat our parrot- he loves bobo! (and bobo loves him; just what every parrot wants- a toddler endlessly fascinated by handing him treats. you should hear him say, 'sam...' in this warning tone, though.)

This is a thread that brings back memories.

When my two ds's were 5 and 3, they wanted to be pirates for Halloween. I made their costumes, madeup their faces, got them plastic swords, and let them wear some of my costume jewelry.

When I brought them all dressed up to my favorite Aunt's, they reminded her that they were "gooood pirates"!

They are 20 and 18 now.

Those were the "gooood old days"!

Thanks so much for all the responses. I'm in the process of checking out all of the books or buying them. Applejuice, that was really sweet. Reminds me to enjoy every day while they are still young because they won't be soon. I need that today. Thanks!
