Nose cloth: questions about hankies.

Hello. I have a question that might be a little obvious for many. . . I have really bad allergies. I own a netti pot and love it, but I still go through an insane amount of tissue. We've switched to cloth for almost everything but TP and I just realized that I should also switch tissues : .

So, what do you use for nose cloth? I own a few hankies, but they're not cheap and I don't really know where to find them. I was thinking about cutting up an old sheet. Any suggestions or experiences with this?

I love flannel hankies! The only ones for adults I've been able to find online are organic and pricey, but if you have a sewing machine you could just cut some squares of flannel (8"x8" is good) and serge the edges. Another option, if you don't mind kid prints, is these flannel wipes intended for diaper cleanup!

Seems to me a WAHM could serge some flannel in nice grownup prints, sell them much cheaper than organic hankies, and still make a nice profit given the small amount of materials and labor! Hint, hint!

My grandma always sews me more napkins than I can possibly use. So sometimes I just take some of my kitchen napkins and designate them as nose tissues. It works really well for me So if you have any extras sitting around, you could use those!

Thats where I get my hankies. They are much cheaper. I have allergies also, and really I have noticed a big difference switching to cloth, no more dust flying in the air everytime I pull a kleenex out of the box. I made up retangular boxes out of the plastic, kinda like crossstich sheets? I rememebered from long ago my sister would make kinda stiff purses out of these. I have them set up all over the house. And we have tiedyed a few of the hankies also. My kids call them sneezenex.

We also just use our cloth tp squares. They're a perfect size, and you can dump them right into the wipes bucket when you're finished. In fact, my allergies and the *insane* amount of paper product I was using to blow my nose is what got us into family cloth.

That's what I do, too.

Yep, I just cut up a flannel sheet for DH to use for nose wipes, he does go through a lot of them.

All our old t-shirts get cut into squares. We use them for this, as well as in place of paper towels for general use.

That's what I was going to suggest, too. We just ordered some of the hankies from Dharma and they are really nice. Very soft (I've had some hankies that were really scratchy). Before that I just used (un-serged) scraps of an old flannel nightgown.

Ladies, that Dharma site is awesome! I ordered some hankies (and some dye and some stuff to dye for Christmas presents). Maybe this isn't so great, considering my original intent was simplification! :

Oh well, DH has been on me to get another hobby b/c I've been really stressed with school, so he was all happy about it. I'm really excited to get the shipment.

You know, I kinda know what you mean. But the way I look at it, their clothes are cheap and my kids have one of a kind items. I also get like their skirts and things and solid dye them. I like plain simple clothing. And it has simpilfied our house, if you exclude my cabinet of dye

I bought my hankies from the Dharma Trading company. I bought 2 dozen of these and I'm happy with them.

eta: I see I'm about the 3rd or 4th person to recomend them! I have a few hankies tie-dyed to match my hats!

Ruthla, those are exactly what I ordered! I smell a new obsession coming my way. I told Dharma that they could not send me a catalog or e-mail updates to help curb the urge for more of their awesome stuff.

We pretty much use hankies exclusively .. my 4 kids and myself. And I have allergies too, so I'm always using them.
I bought like 50 of them from a website, they're the hav-a-hank ones. I don't like cloth wipes or anything for my nose, I like the thinner all cotton stuff, cuz I don't like thicker stuff for that.

thanks so much for this info! i am definitely going to be making some flannel hankies - i never would have thought of it!

I've used rags from t-shirts for tissues my entire formerly-allergic-to-cats-now-prone-to-hay-fever life. I have a basket on the back of both toilets, a basket in the kitchen, and I keep a stash in a drawer of my nightstand (used a basket there when I had a nightstand without drawers) (those are also good for, um, after BDing if ykwim.)

I've recently started using them for pee as well. I had the opposite realization as you.

Regular weight handkerchiefs just don't work for me, I like to have something that I can blow my nose on at least 5 times and those get tend to get soaked with one bad sneeze. Might be something to do with the difference between knit and woven fabrics.

We only have 1 box of kleenex left in the house so I've actually been thinking about not buying anymore and just getting some more of our cloth wipes. They're a single layer organic cotton sherpa and I've used some for ds' runny nose, but not us big peoples. Thanks for the ideas, ladies! That's just what I'll do!!
