He is snoozing in my arms right now. I must have been in early labor for about two weeks because I woke up early Sunday morning with contractions two minutes apart. I woke DH, who called the midwife who suggested walking and showering to see igf they would slow down. Instead they sped up. We got to the hospital labout 9:30am and everything went so quickly. I didn't have time or even want to do all the things I had planned like try the birthing tub or put on music. He arrived at 12:13pm. A couple of annoying hospital things happened -- one is that they wanted constant fetal monitoring when they saw thick meconium. It didn't disrupt my movement but the thing on my tummy was uncomfortable during contractions. Also they asked me to hold off pushing at one point so the midwife could get back from a cesarean. I had a great doula who told me to ignore them and just listen to my body, which is exactly what I did. And everything was fine -- the midwife got there and he came out with an apgar of 9. 7lbs 13oz. 20" long. Knew how to breast feed right away. The nurses called him a text book baby. We went home later that night. I did unfortunately tear, as if I had had an episiotomy, the midwife said. So I am a bit sore. What surprised me most about the experience was that I found the pushing -- and including when I was pushing him down and not just out -- to be the most difficult, and not transition. That is when I had the "i can't do this" feeling. Anyway, all is well and we are doing great.
