Stained clothes and bleach

After almost a year of not using bleach I broke down today. Ds's white football pants were so stained. And I tried everything I knew of naturally to whiten them. But I let my resolve down and used bleach. After I poured it out of the container I knew I would regret it. I got the most horrible headache and the smell that was in my house was nauseus.

So mama's please help me. What can I do to take stains out? I tried vinager soaks and rinses.

Oxyclean.

And good old fashion baking soda/borax with a bit of elbow grease.

I have not found anything that works better than those two things but I'm no expert.

Thanks. I will try oxyclean. I haven't wanted to use it because I haven't done research on it. But I am sure it is much better than bleach!

Oxyclean (oxygen bleach) is a miracle! I had a shirt of DD's that she'd gotten chocolate milk last spring. I washed it as soon as she'd gotten home but it didn't come out (I hung it to dry). I put it away, figuring it was a lost cause.

Dug it out a couple weeks ago after the oxyclean got mildew off one of her other good shirts, figuring why not? Dissolved the oxyclean, let it soak for a day or two, washed it with detergent and a little more oxyclean and the stain came out.

I was so happy cause it's such a cute shirt!! One of my favorites.

Oxyclean is environmentally friendly, but you need to wear gloves using it since the pH is so high (highly basic).

It's a good product, as are other oxygen bleaches (the active ingredients are sodium percarbonate and sodium bicarbonate -- sodium bicarb is baking soda).

Thank you ladies! I got some oxyclean today. And have ds's muddy white football pants soaking in some.

Yeah, I love oxyclean. Don't be afraid to let them soak for over 24 hours. I have done that numerous times for really bad stains (even up to 72 hours) and voila, on anything organic, it works fantastically.

I soaked ds's pants in oxyclean all night and I just washed and WOW! They are so white. They are whiter than when I washed them in bleach. Thanks for letting me know!

I have always bought the Sun brand oxygen bleach. Does anyone have any info on the performance of it compared to the actual oxyclean brand? It is much cheaper to buy Sun at Big Lots. I don't know the concentrations of sodium percarbonate & sod carbonate though. I wish they would put that on the oxy bleaches.

Cool!

I'm guessing that alternate brands of OxyClean type products would work just fine, you just might need to use a little more...but if it's cheaper, that shouldn't be a problem. Why don't you find the 800# on the product (or look it up online) and call them to ask what the concentration is?
