exemption and selective vax

This should be a quick answer (I would think)

If you selective vax, religious exemption is basically out the window, right? (& depending on the state?)

NO. What you and your doctor do is YOUR business. You can have a religious exemption and then do as you wish, it's between you and your doctor.

Technically, legally, yes, you're right- the religious exemption is all or nothing. BUT what works for many moms is to do an exemption and then not report what vaxes they do.

Personally I don't think I'd be comfortable with that, but it works for some families.

What the other posters said. Remember, the exemption is for school only, not your doctor.

so basically it's an issue of the school gets info that none are done - but doc knows otherwise, yes ?

in any event... thanks all for the replies... I dont have to worry about exemption yet for DS2 - for a while but am trying to be prepared

Does anyone know if the dr. is under any kind of (legal) obligation to report "incomplete" vax history, like to the health dept or school? we just filed a religious exemption, but he knows dd is selectively vaxed and also that she is in school (in fact, his kids are in the same school).

So far that's never happened that I know of, but the national vaccine registry database thing makes me a little nervous. It could be used like that, even if it isn't right now.

But no, vax denial isn't a reportable thing like communicable diseases are.

Regarding the vax registry... just this year when DD and DS1 started school, I got the papers to enroll in the registry for them but since I had never heard of it before and am always wary of "big brother" I declined on one paper and just never returned the other...it's still on my fridge:

this was all before I decided to not/delay vax for DS2 - DD and DS1 are fully vaxed on a schedule from over 10 years ago though. :
anyhow - I wonder what this registry is all about as I never did look into after the fact... maybe I should now!

So far *I think* it's just being used in good and appropriate ways.
It's the potential for what I would consider abuse that freaks me out...sort of how like SS cards were never meant to be used for general identification purposes, but over time it was simply too convinient to not be utilized for all it's worth.

Well, that would be illegal because of HIPAA. Your doctor can't share your medical information with someone just because he thinks you're illegally using a religious exemption. The only time a doctor would be able to share medical information would be if he thought there was abuse or medical neglect happening. Selectively vaccinating is not abusive or neglectful, so he can't tell anyone you're doing it. Even if he tried, he could only DCF/CPS type authorities, who have nothing to do with vaccine exemptions. Basically, there's no way he could ever do anything about it, because it would require him to illegally share your child's medical history.

Immunization registries are not supposed to be used in a punitive manner . . . but I would remove your child's name regardless, particularly if you live in a state which mandates healthcare providers to participate in the registry program.
