Even MORE ?s about wool/sweater covers!

Okay, I've got my sweaters, a few different patterns to try, my serger, I know how to lanolize, but have a question about sizing.

When making your pattern/cutting out to size, do you measure around the diaper to get the actual size so the longies/covers are big enough? Or does it just work out to let the cover/longies stretch to cover the diaper?

My son's waist measurement is 16 inches, but around his prefold diaper with a thin doubler, he is 20 inches. His Rise is also 16 inches over the diaper. I would hate to go through all of the work and the purchase of the sweaters just to have it not fit!

Jada

p.s. Are prefolds okay to use with wool covers? They are not elasticized, so I am afraid of getting BF poop on them. That would be a mess..... Would it be better to make some fitteds?

I use my son's hip measurement, over his typical diaper, to cut out sweater pants. I use his waist measurement minus two inches for measuring the elastic for the waist.

If not heavily felted, sweater knits will stretch. But no, I don't rely on that stretch to make it around his bum. I do rely on that stretch to mold to his body, most patterns for sweater pants are not as shaped as those for other pants because the knit is so stretchy.

Prefolds work fine IME. If you do have a poo leak, you wash the pants, no big deal.

You don't have to do fitteds, but I find it more likely that if I use fitteds, I"ll be doing less wool laundry! I think it's just the way of breast milk poop and diapering.
