Vaccinations for 12mo living in college dorm

Hi,

My husband and I work for a university and we live in an apt building with college students, including a high number of international students. Our daughter is 12 mo old and I've only recently (last 203 months) become aware of the idea of not giving her all the shots the doc recommends...I really should have given this more thought since we're fairly "crunchy" in other areas (babywearing, ec, extended bf, etc...).

So, she's had the standard doses up til now. For her 1 yr check up we'll get the last DTaP shot but that's it for now. I feel like we live in a community where there is a higher rate of whooping cough, so I want to give her that shot. The rest...well, we're waiting until I've done more research.

She's had 4 doses of HepB...so that's already done

With the 4th DTaP she should be done for now (I'll worry about the preschool shots later...I should be MUCH more informed by then!)

She's had 2 doses of Hib: I thought I read somewhere on this board that the package insert says one does typically provides immunity?)

She's had 3 doses of IPV so that should be it until the 4-6yr mark (again, I'll be much More informed by then!)

She's had 3 doses of PCV...not sure if we'll get the 12mo booster

So, my question is this: based on the fact that we live with a bunch of college students...who always seem sick and with whom she does have frequent contact....

Should we get another Hib dose?

Should we get the PCV booster?

I don't think we'll do CP (I would rather she get the disease and build her own immunity), but what about MMR? MMR seems like a very "disliked" vax on this board, but again I am concerned b/c of where we live.

Any thoughts? Resources? Links?

Thanks!
Kelly

I would suggest researching the diseases.

I would start by reading lots of books. This may help you decide and feel more informed. Here is a great thread I got from archives. You can also check the rest of the archives and be prepared to spend alot of time reading.

Thread about good books to read

Why four doses instead of three? (No attack here, I'm just curious).

Hi,

No attack taken :-)

I think it is because she got one at birth and then three combo shots (PDRIX that had the HepB in it.

We've with a new ped now and she didn't bat an eye when I refused all the vaccinations today. She didn't ask any questions...just said "ok" and moved on. I wasn't really prepared to talk about it, so I'm kind of glad she didn't ask me any questions.

Thanks for the links...I've got a ton of research to do and that should really help me avoid my school work. I just started a PhD program and the assigned reading is REALLY dry...can't wait to read up on the vax stuff!

Anyone else in a similar living environment?

Well I rent out my spare bedroom to college kids. They never stay very long so we've had quite a few different roomies in the last year. I always have them and their friends hanging around here and wanting to play with my daughter (especially the girls). I also am finishing college myself, plus I'm doing my clinicals at a local hospital. So we're also exposed to tons of germs like you are. But I don't vax, so I'm not much help. Good luck on your research.

we also live in the dorms with lots of international students (we're in family/graduate housing and are the only american family here!) we dont vax at all and we have a fair amount of contact with students and other families. lots of sniffly kiddos my guy works for the university.
good luck in your research!

Thanks for the info...makes me feel better to know that others have made to no vax choice. I know she's really had almost all of them already, but I'm 99% certain we're going to skip the Hep A, MMR and CP. My MIL is a nurse...so I think we'll "forget to mention it" to her!

We did have a few cases of Whooping Cough on campus last year and our Health Center actually recommends that all faculty & staff get the Pertussis and Meningococcal vaccines...but I haven't done it and don't think I will...especially since she out of "infancy" now.

Thanks again for the comments...it really helps to feel connected and "normal".

You can guarantee there have been and will be pertussis cases on campus every year. It generally isn't diagnosed in adults, because it's usually just a bad cough that takes forever to go away. But your DD's way outside the danger stage for pertussis anyway. Past six months it's just a bad cough for most kids.
