Anatomy Books

Hello there, I require the title (and preferably page reference and quotation but that is somewhat superfluous) of an anatomy book which describes the foreskin as an organ.

Ha! My anatomy and physiology book only gives this description

"The skin is very loosely attached to the shaft, allowing for expansion during erection. It continues over the glans as the prepuce or forskin, which is often removed by circumcision."

It also gives this description of the penis " the penis serves to deposit semen in the vagina. Half of it is an internal root and half is the externally visible shaft and glans."
Pages 1039,1040
Most of the pictures are of intact penis' (penii)

My daughter has a 2006 edition A&P book, "Human Anatomy and Physiology". Pictures that include the penis show the circumcised version but the actual anatomy of the penis pictures show the "prepuce" in both. (I may use this opportunity to state my personal displeasure to this word. Although it is an accurate term, I don't like the word "prepuce". I think it is an unpleasant name. I refuse to use it! When I think of how the word sounds it makes me think blech! I vote for foreskin!!)

Anyway, here's what the text says, "The penis consists of an attached root and a free shaft or body that ends in an enlarged tip. The skin coverening the penis is loose, and it slides distally to form a cuff called the prepuce or foreskin, around the glans. Frequently, the foreskin is surgically removed shortly after birth, a procedure called circumcision ("cutting around"). All italics and bold are as printed in book.

Would be nice if the author discussed the actual purpose of the foreskin, spoke of the foreskin in penile development as well as during erection...

But yeah, it's a North American book, it's authors being from Massachusetts and Calgary, Canada so I'm not surprised.

I think I know why you are asking for this, but I think this is the wrong tactic in debating. First, textbooks are full of inaccuracies. Just b/c something is printed doesn't make it true! Second, organ or not, it is wrong to amputate genitals b/c of theoretical future risks. My mom had breast cancer and had a mastectomy. She would not have wanted to have her breasts amputated at birth to avoid this. And more men get breast cancer than penile cancer!

jee'smom could probably tell you what book she uses for her classes. PM her in case she's not lurking around.
