Snap Question

So I know everything I have seen have the little plastic snaps that attach through the fabric, but I was wondering. What about the little metal snaps that you just sew on?

I couldn't get your image, but I think I know what you are talking about.

Are these the ones you are talking about?
I have never really liked them. They seem to shift a little, need a lot of thread, and make pretty big holes in you fabric (like any button that has thread going through the same spot). They also don't hold nearly as well as metal or plastic snaps. I recently found one of my old diapers (only 31 years old), and it had the pressed metal snaps that still work. I use metal snaps on flannel or fleece because I have a huge supply of them.

I know some people that use snap tape with great results.

Yeah, thats what I was talking about, just wondering since I don't have a snap press.... I want to experiment but I don't even have any way to find out what ends up working and what doesn't lol

Ok, I'm an oldie as far as diaper sewers go. I was actually one of the first to get a plastic snap press. Way back in 98, 99 most of the Wahms used snap tape or snap source snaps. You can find snap tape with plastic snaps. That is what the very first original Kissaluvs had. It works fine if you are looking for something just for your own personl stash and don't want to invest in a press.

I started with a "snap press" kit from Joann's, it does metal snaps and it was less than ten dollars including some snaps. Basically it has a ring to place your cap with the prongs in, then you position fabric over that and clamp it down with a big plastic thing that swings down. Next there's a little flip-up hole where you drop in the stud or socket, flip the top back down and smash the whole thing with a hammer to apply. I used it a lot for some bodyshirts. Then I got the Industrial Snap Press, which is for resin snaps but there are dies for applying metal snaps. Personally, I love the resin snap press and after making four diaper covers in the past few days I think it is worth it. I'm kind of a perfectionist, though, so I like the professional look my covers have. Even DH was impressed. Four covers cost me maybe eight dollars, and I still have plenty of material for making more so I don't feel bad paying the high price for the big press. However, I would recommend getting the little applicator kit if you are doing the metal snaps, it makes it so much easier to place a snap exactly where you want it and there are fewer chances that the snap will shift suddenly and get munched when you try to hammer it. HTH!

Snap tape? What is that? I am imagining a strip of cloth with one half of the snap on one strip, and the other half of the snap on the other strip? Can you get that at the regular fabric store? Are they metal or resin snaps? TIA

You can get it with either metal or plastic snaps. I used to get it at the regular fabric store but haven't looked for it in year since I have a press. It looks like this.
