Welcoming Rowen!!!!

Hi Ladies,

My baby boy Rowen Jacob was born on Thursday October 19th at 7:41 a.m. I will give the short version of the story since it is a long one, and I mean LONG!

I started labor monday night, yep monday. Contractions about 10 minutes or less apart and hard enough to have to stop and breathe through them. I went to sleep, slept on and off that night, called the midwives and doula in the morning and started to get set up for the birth. Same thing on all day, ctx from 3 to 30 min apart, same strength all day, I was dialated to about a 4 all day, sometimes up to a 6, sometimes back to a 4, tried to sleep tuesday night, slept in between ctx for a few hours. Wednesday I had an appt. with my cnm (back up plan) so we went to that appt. I went over to the hospital and got a morphine shot so I could sleep for a few hours. We thought I would wake up and things would really get going, well, they didn't. This whole time, baby was in only about half of the pelvis, not really low, and not applying pressure to my cervix, at least not centered on the cervix. That night at about 8:30 we went to the hospital to officially start plan B. Which was pitocin. I got there and was dialated to a 6. I labored with the pitocin for about 5 hours before I asked for an epidural. It was after an official 52 hours of labor. I got the epidural at 8 cm, the cnm broke my water, and I went to sleep. At 6 am the cnm and the ob woke me up. The reccomended a repeat c/s. The ob checked me and said I was complete and my posterior babe (who was only posterior during labor, never before labor) had turned to lateral, and was descending. He said I could try pushing for a half hour and see if I can make progress. Otherwise a c/s.

I have to say at this point I was so exhausted that I almost wanted to get it over with with the c/s. No one really thought it would work, I found out later that my sacrum and pelvis have a dislocated joint and are very crooked, that is probably why baby didn't want to go the right way and descend. Well, I decided that I would try to push, because I was very depressed and dissappointed after my c/s and didn't want to "give up" and feel the same way again. So I started to push, baby finished rotating, descended, and the ob left. After about an hour of pushing my old c/s scar began to really hurt. So they had me stop pushing for a few ctx and another ob came (the other left for the day) and used forceps just to pop the baby's head under the pubic bone. I pushed only about 3 more ctx and out he came!

A full pound bigger than his brother, 8 lb 8 oz. 21 and a half inches tall, and a big 36.5 cm head. He is healthy and I am doing fine as well, other than about 20 stitches! Ouch. But I am very satisfied and happy with the birth and the way things went. I know he wouldn't have descended and been born at home, and I was so so lucky to have my cnm and the nice ob's on call that day. Things turned out really well considering the circumstances.

I am thrilled! I will post a link to pics as soon as I can, but I really need to sleep!
