so how white does a baby's tongue appear if they have thrush? i've looked at some links on other threads for info in the subject but none of it really covered what to look for in the baby's mouth. he doesnt have a rash or anything. i'm still having some nipple pain issues, and just the last couple days or so the left one has some shooting pain while not nursing. also he's been acting upset as if having some painful gas issues that he hadnt done before and makes some almost upset noises while nursing at times - i know its not a lack of milk - any suggestions? any other websites to check out?

ETA of course my mw appt got postponed for a couple weeks and i was gonna ask her today!

When we had thrush issues, my dd#2 had a white tongue and white patches on her cheeks and gums. These would not rub off with my finger. Thrush will scrape off but leaves a red area and sometimes bleeds. It only got worse til we found the right treatment. Check out the www.lalecheleague.org for some helpful stuff. Good luck!

Do a google search for thrush, then hit the "Images" link and you will get a whole bunch of pictures. HTH!

I was having some pain issues in both breasts, and during one of my post partum visits, my midwife noticed I was wearing a nursing bra with an underwire. She told me to change to a sports type bra or a nursing bra with no underwire, and the pain would go away. I did that, and within 2 days, the pain was gone. I was also developing a nice lump in the lower part of each breast, and after changing bras, with a couple of shower massaging sessions, those were both gone too. Also, my sons pediatrition told me to look for white "fluffy" type stuff on his tongue as well as the sides and top of his mouth. Hope you get it all taken care of.

also, some baby's can have thrush/yeast/candida in their mouths and show no visible signs or symptoms. if you are having some pain in your breasts and during nursing, and if your nipples are pink or shiny or if you are having sweet stuff cravings or desires for baked goods or other white flour products, it is likely you have thrush. treat both you and baby even if babe has no signs. the most effective treatment for me has been liquid citricidal grapefruit seed extract per the protocol here: www.drjaygordon.com

The second poster pretty much hit the nail on the head. My daughter, Aja had it about 3 weeks old. White patches on gums and inside of cheeks. Her pedi gave her oral nystatin...she also had this "yeast" in her diaper area and was given nystatin oinment. Very good stuff and it cleared up quickly.

isa's mouth never got patches, just a thin, thin coating on her tongue. i was very symptomatic though. still am. after trying everything. and i mean everything. the ped looked at her tongue today and said that it looked "pretty normal". still a little white, but she said most babies have that and that it is not necessarily a thrush problem. dont know if i believe her or not. my symptoms have improved but are not totally gone. hmmmm.
